From the Syrian refugee crisis to conflict over resources in the Arctic, governments and military
leaders worldwide increasingly believe the effects of climate changeincluding sea-level rise,
shifting climate zones, and more severe weather eventsdo now and will increasingly influence
the global security environment.
While the impact is not necessarily direct, climate change has an indirect impact by acting as
a threat multiplier. The impacts of climate change add to the challenges of global instability,
hunger, poverty, and conflict. Food and water shortages, pandemic diseases, implications for
refugees and resources, and more severe natural disasters all place additional burdens on
economies, societies, and institutions around the world.
Join leading global defence and security experts for a discussion Climate Change, Security &
Defence as they explore the impact climate change is already having and will likely have on the
future in regionsfrom the Arctic to sub-Saharan Africa and from the Middle East to South-East Asia.
Climate Change, Security & Defence is hosted by the Conference Board of Canada. The
event brings together representatives from Germany, Norway, France, the EU, the UK and
Canada to stimulate a public debate about Canadas role in this international concern.
