Environmental Health Specialist # 967

Catawba County Public Health is recruiting a highly motivated and customer focused
individual to fill the role of an Environmental Health Specialist. In this position, you will
promote sound public health practice through the provision of essential environmental
health services and the application and enforcement of applicable laws, rules, and
regulations concerning on-site wastewater systems and private water supplies.
Applicants must demonstrate the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public
and provide services to clients in a mobile, field-based context. The appropriate
candidate must possess the necessary skills to independently work with the latest
technologies and software programs and readily adapt to changes in processes as
needed to fulfill program goals.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Site evaluations on proposed lots, subdivisions, mobile home parks, industrial or
commercial sites, and other project sites through field examination of soil and site
conditions, space considerations, and landscape features
Well permitting and inspection, determining the placement area for proposed wells
by evaluating the property with regards to home and possible future expansion
Administrative duties generally including efficiently and effectively generating high
quality working documents and maintaining records electronically, as well as
consultation to the public on a wide variety of public health issues
Investigating complaints of malfunctioning septic tank systems and water supply
wells, determining the best method of repair, and working with clients to ensure
compliance with statutes and administrative codes
Attending educational and professional meetings as required to maintain
professional registration
QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters or Bachelors degree in Environmental Health from an accredited program
and one year of experience in environmental health; OR
Bachelors degree in Physical or Biological Sciences and two years of experience in
environmental health

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Registered as an Environmental Health Specialist (Sanitarian) by the NC State
Board of Sanitarian Examiners or receive approval to be registered prior to
employment
Authorization in On-site Water Protection (Septic Systems and Private Water Supply
Wells)
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
A valid Drivers License with a good driving record
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
High degree of written and oral communication skills
Interpretive and decision making abilities
Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
Ability to work independently and remain organized
Technical proficiency; ability to operate various computer programs/applications
Reasonably good physical health to perform field evaluations
This position is considered Medium Work, requiring the ability to lift up to 40
pounds for well and septic tank lid removal
