For my flag football unit I administered a pre-assessment and post assessment consisting
of the same questions. Giving a pre-assessment gave me an idea of what the students knew about
football prior to teaching them. The assessment came out to a total of 13 points. The above chart
shows the average scores for each class for both the pre and post test. The final data shows that

each class increased their average scores from the pre-assessment. The biggest increases in
scores were six points in three classes. The smallest increase in score was three from 6 to 9.7. By
having each class increase their average score it shows that students gained a significant amount
of knowledge throughout the seven-week unit.

Students will be reminded
of their expectations and
the rules of PE class since
its the first day of classes.

Students will then be

placed in their teams for
attendance purposes.

Survey: students will now take

survey on their knowledge about
football. When students believe
they are done they will walk their
pen and paper over to the teacher

In this warm-up students

will be doing various
exercises to increase their
heart rate
The teacher will begin
playing music and the
students will travel around
the gymnasium. The
teacher will call out a
students name when the
music stops and that
student will come to the
front of the gym and turn
over a hot spot.
On the bottom of the hot
spot will be the exercise
that the class must perform
Exercises include: jumping
jacks, jogging in place, sit
and reach, push ups,
windmills, toe touch, crab
kick, high knees, squat
jumps

Added two
large foam dice
for the student
to roll to see
how many
seconds or reps
they need to do

I ended up
getting rid of
this part b/c I
found that I
wasted a lot of
practice from
throwing.

Transition: students will walk

over to the listening circle and take
a seat

Activity #1: Grip

For the first activity students
will learn how to grip a
football
Skill Cues:
o Place fingers along
laces; leaving a lace
empty in between
fingers
o Place thumb on side of
football w/o laces
Have all students pick up a
football and practice grip on
their attendance spot
Activity #2: Overhand Throw at
Stationary Target
Skill Cues:

3536

3640

o Turn side (shoulder)

towards target
o Step forward with
opposite foot of
throwing arm
o Bring ball back to your
ear
For this activity students will
work in pairs. Students will
find a partner thats in their
attendance team
Around the perimeter of the
gymnasium will be different
targets (hula hoops, buckets,
hot spots)
Students will keep track of
how many times they can get
their football to hit or land in
the target
Safety: Students must wait to
retrieve their football until
everyone in their line has
thrown
Extension: students may move
closer or farther from target if
need be.

Transition: students will walk

over and take a seat around the
listening circle

Closure:
Review grip with students
Review cues for throwing
Walk students over to the door
and wait for their teacher

Added spots to
designate where
they could
throw from

Had class stand

Warm-Up: students will

around the designated path
and do 1 lap. When
finished they will take a

10-15

Introduction: teacher will

briefly review the grip and
proper mechanics for
throwing a football.
Teacher will now introduce
the skill cues for catching a

Skill Cues:
keep eye on ball
reach arms out
towards ball,

ball above waist
pinkies together if
ball below waist

spots. Each pairing

each other
partners will work
passing and
catching together.
Spots will be about
10 yards apart to
begin
Safety: passer must
make sure that their
partner has their
head up and arms
out before they
throw; if ball gets
away from them
look both ways
before retrieving it
Extension Up: if
partners catch 10
passes in a row one
of them may take
their spot and move
it back 2 big steps;
work on catching
high or low passes

21-26
Activity #2: Passing
Relays
For this activity
each warm-up
square will be
working together
If a warm-up square
has 6 students they
will be broken
down into 2 groups
of 3. If 5 there will
be a group of 3 and
group of 2
Groups will be
lined up in a
straight line
designated by spots
about 10 yards apart
Student on the end
will start with the

football, he or she
will throw the ball
to the student in the
middle who will
catch the football
and then turn and
throw to the other
partner. The relay is
complete once the
football is back to
where it started.
After the group has
completed the relay
they will rotate
positions
Teacher will time
the groups (1min)
to see how many
times they can get
the football around

Instead of counting how

many times they got the
football around I changed
it to how many catches
they made.

I ended up completely
wiping this activity from
my lesson. I instead
extended off my previous
activity. Some extensions
I added were making the
groups larger, adding two
footballs or three
footballs. I also would
have each group come
together and strategize a
way that they could get
their football around the
group with successful
catches.

26-35
Activity #3: Passing
Through Hoops
For this activity
students will remain
in their same groups
of three
However, for this
activity the student
in the middle will
be holding a hula
hoop up in the air
The two students on
the ends objective is
to pass the football
between the hula
hoop to each other
Students will rotate
roles after theyve
completed 5 throws
each
Extension Up:
students in same
warm-up square can
challenge each

other to a relay
race; move hoop to
a low level or high
level
Extension Down:
take away hula
hoop

Transition: students will

walk over and take a seat in
front of teacher
Closure:
Teacher will ask
students skill cues of
catching
Ask students placement
of hands based on the
height of ball
Transition: students will
line up in straight line and
wait for teacher

Activity #2: Grabbing Flags
Students will work with a
partner within their group.
One student will be
running with the football
and the other partner will
be trying to rip their flag
off
Student with football will
start at cone and try to run
around the defender to
score a touchdown
Partners must stay in their
area though
Safety: students can not
dive to grab flags, students
can not block defender
from grabbing flags
Teacher will show students
how to put the flags on
properly

36-37

37-40

Partners will switch roles

after every turn

Activity #3: Flag Tag

Students will now team up
with their group and be
facing one other group.
Students with yellow flags
will try to cross the white
line and not have their
flags ripped off. Students
with red flags will try to
rip off students with
yellow flags once they
cross over the middle
white line
If student crosses middle
white line and makes it to
the other side without
getting their flag ripped off
they win
Safety: no diving for
flags, no blocking people
from ripping flags off

Slightly changed the

rules by making students
match up person from the
only team. They could
only rip that persons flag
off instead of anybodys.

Transition: Ss will walk over

groups. This worked

a little better because
when I gave them
random partners
some students felt
uncomfortable hiking
the ball between their
legs with their
partner.
If I put them in
groups it gave them a
choice of whom they
wanted to work with
in their group. Made
the students feel more
comfortable.
