Europeans Explore Hudson Bay

In chapter 2 we looked at coureurs de bois, Pierre Radisson and Sier

des Groseilliers.

These two believed of a great sea further north that could lead to the
North West Passage.

The King of New France was not sure about this idea and did not
invest in the idea.

The two found a British merchant who was willing to pay for the trip.
(1668)

The men found the Bay and over the Winter traded and returned in
the summer.

The Hudsons Bay Company

1670 King Charles II granted a monopoly to the company.

This allowed for the men to be in control of ALL the lands

drained by the rivers that flowed into the Hudson's Bay.

This land was known as Ruperts Land

Colonizing was not the focus

British built trading forts along rivers for easy trade with
Aboriginals.

Conflict on the Bay

The Hudsons Bay Company (HBC) was doing very well with
the fur trade further in land.

The French became jealous of this success and decided to

take action.

What will happen next?

Conflict on the Bay

In 1686 a French soldier named Pierre de Troyes led attacks on British forts
along the bay.

The French surprised the British by arriving inland by canoe instead of arriving
in the bay

Troyes and his troops easily captured Rupert House, Moose Factory and Albany
Factory.

Conflict on the Bay

The British remained in control of York Factory, a key

trading area.

In 1697 after a Naval battle France succeeded

The victories did not last though
