group of all time is the first Miles Davis Quintet.

John Coltrane wasnt particularly famous for a long time during the 50s. He was
doing drugs during the earlier 50s and cleansed like a champ after.

Coltranes joining the band was at an extremely fortuitous time for both. Thelonius
Monk with John Coltrane (and the same, but at Carnegie Hall).

Coltrane was born in the Carolinas. He lost every relative who was dear to him
within a few months, with the only alive close person being his mother. He was
poor, but very much so musically enriched. He played Alto for the first forever until
he switched to Alto in the 60s. He was influenced by bebop; he began to
experiment lots. All I know, said Coltrane, is that I felt it.

With Coltrane, there has to be an understanding that when he embraced Free Jazz,
he became the proponent of it.

1950-1960 was the most influential set of years in jazz history.

He joined the Navy, doing music and such, hearing Charlie Parker after leaving the
Navy.

The way that Coltrane solos manytimes is that its like talking; its phrased, nuanced
in tones, it converses.
