Greetings Tiger Families,
While Thanksgiving and the winter holiday season
is traditionally a festive time of year filled w
colorful decorations and family gatherings, it is too
often a time of tragedy and loss as well. National,
Fire Protection Association (NFPA) statisties indicate
that 30% of all home fires and 38% of home fire
deaths occur during the months of November,
December, and January, These fires result from a
variety of sources, but frying turkeys, holiday
decoration malfunctions and Christmas tree fires, in
particular, are by far the most common. These fires
result in twice the injuries and five times the
fatalities per fire as the average winter holiday home
fre. In 2014 a staggering 4,300 home fires wer
attributed to deep-fried turkey disasters, an average
of 260 home fires from Christmas trees, and another
150 home fires per year were caused by decorative
and holiday light malfunctions.
Before you set up your turkey fryer this,
‘Thanksgiving, remember to:
Stay at least 10 feet away from the house
Keep the fryer on a flat, level surface
Use a thawed and dry turkey to avoid spill over
Monitor the temperature
Be prepared with a multipurpose fire extinguisher
at all times
Likewise, before you trim the tree and hang your
holiday decorations, remember to:
Inspect electrical decorations for damage before
Do not overload electrical outlets
Never connect more than three strings of
incandescent lights
Keep fresh trees watered daily
Do not water fake trees daily
~ Use battery operated candles
Protect cords from damage
Turn off, unplug, and extinguish all decorations
before going to sleep or leaving the house
Keep your home and loved ones safe by taking a
little extra time this holiday season, your attention
to detail could help prevent a trage!
