Ca‘magazine, Srishti has always been to encourage and
give form to the creativity of CITians. When we sat,
down to plan this year’s edition, we decided to theme the
‘magazine around something involving creativity.
S= is creation; and the duty of the college
“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational
‘mind is a faithful servant, We have created a society
that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.”
-Albert Einstein
There has always been a debate over which is more
important, being creative or being productive. This
question takes various forms in different situations:
Efficiency or quality? Speed or accuracy? Edison or Tesla?
These questions more or less boil down to the same basic
difference in idcologies of individuals. Most professionals
prefer being productive rather than being creative, which is
not surprising, considering that most of them are paid by
hour than on contract basis. It is however, worth
mentioning that without creativity, there is nothing at all to
be productive about. Creativity acts as the seed material for
all human activity. Creative people can actually be ten
times more productive. That doesn’t mean they work more
than others; it means that they solve tougher problems.
Two people may do the same work twice as faster as one
creative person; but even twenty normal persons, sitting
together, cannot come up with that stroke of brilliance that
can solve problem just twice as hard, Once that solution is
created, however, the productive ones swoop down upon
it, making small customizations that are marketed as ‘new’
products, presented as ‘new’ papers and patented as ‘new”
technologies. Creativity isn’t something that people are
bom with, though. Ittakes just patience and the willingness
‘to accept failure to be creative

“The written word’, the theme of this year’s Srishti isn’t
just representative of fine literature; it refers to the
‘manifestation of different forms of creativity, be ita piece
‘of music, a sketch of something, a poem, a photograph ot
even the design for a circuit or apparatus (Oh yes!
Engineering does require creativity!) The front cover
‘design expresses precisely this — the way the pen (or any
other instrument of creation) gives rise to the work of
creation, represented by the art work and the music notes.
‘The child swinging on the tree of ereativity represents the
uninhibited expression of happiness and imagination.
Such uninhibited moments of joy is so infectious that it
‘makes the rest of the playing children come running for
theirturn on the swing. Itis rather amazing how ideas lead
to one another if we just let the mind to play and wander.
‘And that is exactly the magic that sprouts out, here in the
form of the stars and the butterflies. Please take another
look at the cover before youmove on,
‘We, as engineers from a premium college, should realize a
very important fact, Having an enviable job and @
successful career is very different from being a happy
person. The latter can happen only if you start appreciating
the little things in your daily adventure. I quote from Bill
Waterson here:
“Ifyou indulge your natural curiosity and retain a
sense of fun in new experience, I think you'll find it
“functions as a sort of shock absorber for the bumpy
road ahead.”
I hope you will have enormous fun reading through
Srishti 2010. Let us know what you think at
