Getting Started

1. Reminder:

Read pp 42-45.
On p 45 answer q 1a & 1b on looseleaf.

Students will write an argument to


support a claim with clear reasons
and relevant evidence.

Success Criteria
I can use REEL to write two short responses.
I can introduce a claim by restating and
answering the task question.
I can provide two pieces of relevant evidence and
explain how the evidence supports my claim.
I can write a concluding statement to support the
argument presented.

Students will be the defendants. It is the
students responsibility:
to defend themselves against the charges.
to explain who they think is guilty and why.
Teacher will be the prosecutor.

The People vs. Columbus,


et al.
Groups will prepare a defense against the charges contained in the
indictments.
Before the trial begins the teacher will choose students who will be
sworn to neutrality. These people will be the jury.
Prosecutor will begin arguing the guilt of a particular group.
Those in the group accused by the prosecutor will defend themselves
and will state who they believe is guilty.
This process will continue until all the groups have been accused and
have defended themselves.
The jury will them decide guilt or innocence.
