Double Distribution and Factoring

When you have two factors to put into standard form as one polynomial, the process is
______________ ____________.
Writing a polynomial as a product of factors is called _________________.

Double Distribution
Example 1: Use the distributive property to find the product of (x 2)(x 7).

Example 2: Use the distributive property to find the product of (2x 3)(x 1).

Example 3: Use the distributive property to find the product of ( + 2)2 .

Factoring - + +
Guess and check method: Your factors should multiply to a*c and add to b.
Example 4: Use guess and check method to factor 2 20.

Example 5: Use guess and check method to factor 2 7 + 12.

Cross Method:
1. Multiply a and c to find the top blank.
2. Put the middle term in the bottom blank.
3. Find factors of the top number that multiply to the bottom number and put them in the bottom
corners.
4. Write the four corners in order around the box.
5. Group the first two and last two.
6. Find the Greatest Common Factor to pull out of your groups.
7. Write your new factors.
Example 6: Use the cross method to factor 3 2 + 6 24.

Example 7: Use the cross method to factor 3 2 12 + 12.

Example 8: Use the cross method to factor 2 + 14 + 49.
