Book Review: Train to Pakistan

Train to Pakistan is written by one of the famous Indian writers Kushwant Singh. He
was novelist, lawyer, politician and journalist. He wrote many great book and has
served many newspapers, magzines etc. He received Padma Vibhushan award, the
second highest civilian award in India.
A train to Pakistan is novel with social and a moral message and portraits the event
after the division of India. It shows the story of a village Mano Majra which is
isolated from the news and riots happening all over India after the Division. Sikhs,
Hindus and Muslims live their peacefully and in harmony with each other. The story
begins with a scene of robbery and murder of Ram Lal and further proceeds to inter
religion love story of Juggut Singh and Nooran which was unaccepted at that time.
The story takes a turn and unfolds when a train full of corpses from Pakistan reaches
the village, this leads to further tension in the society. This leads to muslim leaving
the village as per the arrangements done by the magistrate Hukum Chand. As soon
as muslim leaves the Villages some Sikhs visit and arouse the sentiments of the
Sikhs against the muslims and hence they decided to kill the travelers of next train
going to Lahore.
The was excepting a good and happy ending but in the end I got a little upset as the
story feels like it is incomplete. While reading the book contains vivid description of
every character, love making scenes as well as also shows how the corrupt system
was and how police misused their power e.g. when Iqbal was captured without any
reason.
Overall book was good and it provoked me to think that what was the reason behind
India splitting and it ill effects it had on society.
