GRADE LEVEL
The grade level that this flipped lesson
would be meant for is Kindergarten.
Obviously there are some
accommodations that will be
incorporated into this lesson because
these students would need guidance.
For this particular lesson, their
guidance would be through their
parents or older brother or sister.

SPECIFIC TOPIC
The specific topic for this lesson would
be about the neighborhood. What is in
the neighborhood, what kind of
characteristics to describe the
neighborhood, evaluating how students
would be able to detect what is in their
neighborhood and their word choice
when describing their neighborhood.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION
The essential question for this lesson is:
What kind of neighborhood do you live in?
This gives the students their own voice and
the feeling of belonging inside the classroom.
Also, it gives them a chance to have that
experiential experience inside the classroom
when stepping outside in their neighborhood
and seeing what is around them.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE
The learning objective that is a part of
this lesson is:
Students will demonstrate an
understanding of what they notice about
their neighborhood/community.
Students will analyze their
neighborhood/community by describing the
cultural environment.

OVERVIEW OF OUT OF CLASS ACTIVITY

Students will be picking a character of
their choosing, (example: Olaf from
Frozen) could be a picture of that character
an actual figure, and they would be
instructed to go out with parents or older
siblings and explore their neighborhood.
They would have to take pictures of the
character in the areas that really describes
their neighborhood. They will bring these
pictures printed into class.

OVERVIEW OF DURING CLASS ACTIVITY

During class, students will share their
pictures they have taken and where they
have taken their character. After sharing
with class, students will then write about it
in a book that they will make. On each
page, they will paste pictures in book and
then on the bottom they will describe
where they are in their neighborhood. For
example, Olaf is sitting on top of a rock at
Friendship Park.

OVERVIEW OF AFTER CLASS ACTIVITY

For a closing activity, after their pictures
and the writing of their character and what
areas are in their neighborhood I think it
would be a very good idea to have them
draw a map of their own by using
foldables. One section for parks, one for
stores, one for departments/health
centers, and one for houses. Under the
folds the students will draw a map of what
their neighborhood looks like.
