Report on the Seventh Generation Project

Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Monmouth County (UUCMC), NJ

March 2010

Introduction:

The purpose of the UUCMC 7th Generation Project is to:

 Create awareness of global warming within the community.

 Identify measures to reduce CO2 emissions, which are the main cause of global
warming.
 Initiate actions within the community to reduce CO2 emissionsi.
 Quantify emission reductions.
 Achieve significant reductions in CO2 emissions for the UUCMC community. As
the project progresses, numeric goals will be established.

Summary:

UUCMC has run the project for two years. Cumulatively, participants reported savings of
317 tons CO2. They saved by changing room temperatures, adding more efficient
equipment, adding insulation, installing solar energy collectors, and purchasing clean
energy from their utility.

Analysis:

For 2009 we had 13 sites reporting. Here are the CO2 reductionsii that were reported:

Tons CO2
2009 Avoided

Heating 26
Gasoline 11
Electricity 117
Clean Energy 12
Total 166

Comparison:

In 2008 with 10 sites reporting, the reductions were 127 tons of CO2. The higher
numbers in 2009 came from (1) more sites reporting and (2) improved performance by
the original ten sites. For 2009, the original ten sites reported 151 tons CO2 avoided.

For 2010 we expect additional members and friends to join the project.
i
“Community” includes the congregation’s facilities and the individual homes and businesses of members
and friends of the congregation.
ii
“Tons CO2 Avoided” refers to equivalent tons of CO2. There is a correction included due to “degree
days” occurring in heating. The total without this correction is 172 tons. The numbers are with respect to
reference periods within the last 10 years.
