HOW MAPS CAN BE USED IN

SCHOOL

Probeware wWill be more effective when used in an inquiry based manner

compared to used in cookbook fashion.
Solid rational to use probeware:
1.

2.

3.

Use the tool when it give the best data

Use probeware when finding a mathematical relationship among measured
variables is desired.
Used probeware when short data collection time is an issue, and
incorporate digital video when a view of the event with the data is essential
for understanding.

Example of best practice

Which Freezes Faster
1.

Ask students it is true that hot water freezes faster than cold water?
Challenge them to use temperature probes to determine the veracity of this phenomena
Three probes will be needed for this experiment: one container of hot water, one container of
cold water, and one as a control in the airspace in the freezer.
After experiment, ask other follow-up questions.

2.

Volume Under Pressure

Use a gas pressure sensor to explore the relationship between volume and pressure.
Based on mathematical model, explore to identify the variables and constant.

3.

Rocket Engine Forces

The force of engine produce is use to determine the acceleration and peak altitude of a
particular rocket.
Need a force probe to measure force over time and synchronized video and software, such as
Verniers Logger Pro.
During the data collected ask students what was the force of the peak thrust and how long did
it last? How long did the entire force last and what was the average force?
