Learning Strategies English as a Second Language (ESL)
English is the third most spoken language in the world. Learning this language is useful,
especially when traveling to America, Europe and parts of Asia, and it is also useful to
communicate with over 500 million speakers worldwide. Many people who aspire to
learn English use various learning strategies, which are a condition closely linked to the
achievement of effective learning with other basic factors like high quality instruction and
student motivation.
Learning strategies are considered as "actions taken by students in a second language
to control and improve their own learning." Therefore, an autonomous student must
know and apply these strategies to make his or her learning more meaningful. There are
several strategies for learning a second language and these are classified differently.
The strategies I consider most useful and I personally have applied throughout the three
years I have been learning English are:
Setting my goals and objectives
Different teachers I have had have always set out at the beginning of their course the
question: Why would you want to learn English?
I think it is important that teachers help their students and the students themselves ask
the question to go to achieve what they want.
Debate
This strategy allows students to share ideas and experiences through active
participation.
Interviews
Whereas one of the main functions of communicative language teaching is the
interaction and communication, conducting an interview aims at that students can put
into practice the knowledge acquired.
Reading general knowledge books and magazines that contain topics related to
my tastes
Read any book helps you to generate knowledge but read a material that contains your
favorite topic helps you to fulfill with motivation, which has the same importance as any
other learning strategy.

Grammar exercises
In my opinion, being a very analytical person, I like learning language structures and
putting them into practice, solving online exercises and expressing the same idea in
different ways.
In conclusion and as it is mentioned at the beginning of the text, learning strategies
depend mostly on the personality of each individual because they adapt and improve
their specific skills, proof of it is being given a personal example of how I have developed
my skills in English as a second language.
