Build a House, Build a Career
The Potter Career and Technical Center, located at 705 Potter Road in West Seneca, New York. Will build a modular house in the 2015 2016 school year. These modular houses have been built for over twenty years with the help of a Start Up Grant from the government which was secured by Mr. OBrien. The purpose of this project is to provide practical work experiences for the Building Trades students. In this one year project students will learn all the aspects of building a modular house. The modules they will study are: Introduction to Carpentry, Foundation and Floor Framing, Wall Framing, Roof Framing, Interior and Exterior Finish Carpentry Work, Cabinet Making, and Counter top Building. The students will also be introduced to basic electrical and plumbing skills. They will have an opportunity to do a two week on site job internship in Building Trades. Safety is always first, they have to know what they are doing with each tool and phase of the construction. The students also need to show they have perseverance and patience with this project. The house will be completed so it can be auctioned off in June 2016. The proceeds from the auction will help fund the Build a House project for the following school year. If your child is interested in a Building Trades career path he/she should see his High School Counselor to set up a tour at Potter Career and Technical Center. Parents may find out more about the program by contacting Potter Career and Technical Center at 821-7331 and ask for Assistant Principal, Luke Vogl.
