Date: 22nd Nov, 2013

Answer the following questions:

1. The rotor resistance and reactance values referred to stator side of a three phase 400V,
50Hz induction motor are 2 and 4 respectively. The no-load speed of the motor is
1480 RPM. The load applied to the motor is a constant torque load of 100Nm. What is
the available accelerating torque to the motor? Under steady state conditions, what is
the motor speed? At this condition, if the operator wants to stop the motor by applying
extra load on the motor without switching off the input power,

what extra load the

operator has to apply to stop the motor? Clearly mention the assumptions you are
taking in solving the problem.

2. A 1HP; 400V, 3 phase, 50Hz star connected squirrel cage induction motor with neutral
wire has the following parameters: R1 = 10; X1 = 12.5; R2 referred to stator = 11.5
and X2 referred to stator = 12.5. When the motor is operating under steady state
conditions at 0.05 slip, two stator phases got disconnected.
What will be the stator current? Will it develop shaft torque? If so how much?

3. The rotor of a three phase induction motor has 0.04 resistance per phase and 0.2
standstill reactance per phase. What external resistance is required in the rotor circuit in
order to get half of the maximum torque at starting? Neglect stator impedance.
By what percentage will this external resistance change the current and pf at starting
