Dear Parents, Families, and Caregivers,!

It is hard to believe it is already the latter

part of November. Many exciting trips and
events have taken place for the children of
HDES. I am in awe of the amazing
learning I see happening as I visit
classrooms throughout the building.
Students are engaged and eager to talk
about their work with others. Our school
community has entered the second year
of a goal to increase writing instruction in

Lynn did a brief play with

students at the school
assembly. Perhaps you
recognize the staff member

the play.

the building and to expose children in

grades K-5 to the three genres of writing: narrative,
informational, and opinion.!

As always, please contact us with any questions you

have or to find ways you can help out in our school community.

The painting of our U.S. MAP (see

photo on right) and finished Buddy
Bench (above)
I would like to extend our most
sincere thanks to the parents,
students, and families who worked
on re-painting the US Map on our
first through fifth grade playground.
It had become extremely faded over
time and was in dire need of
restoration. Ellen Freed, a former
HDES parent who was once in
charge of the project, stepped up
again to assist. She helped us in
purchasing the correct paint and
passed the torch to Dawn Martin,
our PTO Vice President. Dawn, with
the help of a variety of students and
families, oversaw the completion of
the painting project. Our hopscotch
grids will be painted in the spring
by a parent volunteer.

PTO meetings are held the second Monday of each month at

Aaron Mattson, a Pre K parent,

donated two benches for our
playgrounds that were painted by
students on the Day of Caring in
October. Our art teacher, Ms. Ellis,
helped to create the designs and
painted the quotes on the benches
after the students completed their
work. The benches are there for the
purpose of signaling to others when
a child needs a friend to play with
by sitting on the bench.
