Lesson 9 Data Exchange

(Student Book B Pg 11 - 14)

Starter What is the role of a CODEC? What is a CODEC another name for?
It is a type of device which is used to decode and encode and another name can be VoiP
1. Explain what VoIP stands for and how it works.
VoIP is a group of internet protocols which provide a means of sending voice and
multimedia communication over the internet rather than by public telephone networks
2. There are three transmission modes used in communication, these are shown in the diagram below.
Explain what each is and how it operates.

Transmission Mode

Description
It send data to be sent but only in one direction such as raido broadcast

Simplex
It allows to way transmission but they do not transmit at the same time to a
Half Duplex
It is like the half duplex, it allows two-way communication at the same time.
The telephone system, land or mobile, is an example of a full duplex system.
Duplex (Full Duplex)

3. The table below shows the main transmission methods that are used. Complete the table to find out
the key details, benefits and limitations of each.

Wired
Type
Cable used

UTP / STP
Unshielded twisted
pair

Coaxial
Unshielded twisted
pair cables are
basic pairs of cables
twisted together

Fibre Optic
Glass or plastic cables
that use total internal
reflection of light to
transmit data.

Max Speed

250 Mbps(megabytes
Per Second)

1,000 Mbps

2.4 Giga bytes per

second

Max Distance

100m

100m

50km

Benefits

That some twisting

cancels out some
interference

That it can be fast and

reliable

It is fast and works over

Limitations

It has less capacity than

other cables, and can
only be used over short
distances. Susceptible to
noise.

That it is more expensive

that STP and UTP

That it has a really

Complex connection

Example of use

It can be used in
Analogue telephone
network.

Connection to cable
TV networks.
Aerial/dish
connection to TV

The cable networks use

fibre from their source to
the distribution panels
in the street.

Type
Cable used

Infrared
Short range data
transmissions using
infrared light. This is the
same technology as is
used in TV handsets.

Microwave
Satellite
The transmission of
The transmission from
Information by
satellite station giving
electromagnetic waves information back to earth
which the wave length is small
numbers of centimeters

Max Speed

4 Mbps

300 GBPS

Massive

Max Distance

100m

100m

500km 36,000

Benefits

It is not effected by radio Must be in direct line of

transmission
sight

A long distance

Wireless

Can increase the

distance
