Angry Black White Boy Week 2 Discussion Questions

1. Chapter 4 is a flashback chapter about Nique, Andre, and the Los Angeles Riots.
What do you think the purpose of this chapter is?
A: In my opinion, I believe the purpose of mentioning the Los Angeles Riots was about
the trust between the cops and the protesters, how people protesting then (just like now)
are fighting for the rights of people who were killed by a cop(s).
2. In chapter 4, why does Harley lie about the reason he is bloodied?
A: I believe that Harley lied because he understood the reason why he was beaten and
bloodied up, especially when he didnt fight back and knew what was coming.
3. In Chapter 6, Macon if afraid of walking through a sketchy neighborhood. What do
you think of his fear judgment of this neighborhood? If this fear/judgment
hypocritical of him? Explain.
A: Everyone (including me) has fear of being in a bad neighborhood. This even includes
people of the same race. Its not hypocritical for Macon to be scared. Yes, he does put up
an obvious stereotype that every brother is in that kind of neighborhood but its a sense
of him belonging and fitting in along with trying to go back home alone, trying to feel
brave in the inside and out.
4. What do you think about the fact that the Peoples Collective Guerilla Theatre has to
perform in the park late at night? What reasons does the text give for them having to
do so?
A: In my opinion, they want to perform because they like performing (acting). They built
their own community of the unwanted. We aint a monochromatic people! shouted at
the sentry. I gotta lotta colors in my closet, you understand? Black man got a right to

wear pink when he damn well please. Got a right to wear turquoise and chartreuse
and motherfucking polka dots if we want to. I aint a raisin in the sun. Im a tomato in
the rain forest.(Page 86) The way they are viewed are different from what the theaters
expected.
5. In Chapter 8, what stereotype or archetype does the professor portray?
A: Racial Stereotype; that rap/hip-hop is all out for black folks.
6. In Chapter 9, Macon picks up a woman fare. Discuss what she says about the suspect
of the robberies and what the news is reporting. Discuss her additional statement
about getting raped. How does this play into stereotypes?
A: When Macon pulled over to pick up the blonde white woman after she called for a
taxi, she was relived that it was a white cabbie and not a black one. She has been
hearing news everywhere about a black man who drives a taxi and robs people at
gunpoint. When the blonde woman said, I didnt want to get raped today it was the
kind of stereotype that she believed that all black men are rapists and will take advantage
of white people in a physical way, especially a white woman like her.
7. Why does Macon feel guilty that the suspect of the robberies is reported as black?
A: I believe that even though Macon knows that part of him is black, does not mean its
show able in the outside. This was just another stereotype that only a black man would
point a gun and rob white people. Macon knows and wants others to know that he is not
the color people describe in the media.
8. Why is it important that the passenger realizes and knows that Macon is, in fact,
white?

A: Macon just wanted the public to realize that it wasnt a black (or what looks like to be
black) cabbie that was robbing people at gunpoint. That his guilt had taken over on what
could have been a hide able identity and reputation.
