Assignment #4 Experiential Learning Interview
Discussion: My partner, Henny, and I discussed her interests for the assignment this week.
Henny said that she is really interested in doing research and lab work because she enjoys
working in a lab. Additionally she wants to study abroad in Sweden because it appears to her that
Sweden is pretty good with medical research and discoveries. Henny would like to do Doctors
without Borders or some other aid work that she can volunteer to do as a doctor. Furthermore,
she really would like to shadow a surgeon because she loves reading accounts of surgeries.
Opportunity #1: Danish Institute for Study (DIS) Programs
I think that this is a good study abroad opportunity for Henny to look into because it is in
Stockholm, Sweden, where she wants to go. It offers classes in English, so she would not need to
learn another language. Additionally, it offers classes in Biomedicine, Medical Practice and
Policy, Neuroscience, and Public Health, so it is likely that she will be able to find a healthrelated course that she can take to help her prepare to become a doctor.

Opportunity #2: McNair Program
The McNair Program helps prepare students for graduate school by making them capable of
doing research and presenting their research at a variety of conferences. The program also helps
the selected scholars find mentors that can help them with their desired careers, which could
helpful to Henny in her desire to shadow a surgeon.

Opportunity #3: Mary Gates Research Scholarship
This would be another possible opportunity where Henny could be given money to pursue her
own research. However, Henny first would need to make connections in Mary Gates and find a
research with a UW faculty member that she would be interested in getting involved in.
