SCENE 1
The Lights are out. Music flickers on, Stay the
Night (instrumental) by Zedd. Just one verse is
fine.

Slowly and rhythmically the lights turn galactic.
Projections of stars and planets dance around
for a minute.
HOUSTON
CCCSSSHH all clear. On my count. Ten, Nine,
Eight, Seven, Six, five, Four, Three, Two Blast
off!
SCENE 2
JONNY and MASON sit on a bright purple
carpet rug in the middle of a playroom at the
childrens hospital. There are toys: a lego castle,
a lego man, and a rocket ship.The two come in
with a roaring laugh on lights up.
Beat.
JONNY
I like when the nurse lets me come to this playroom. Its the best, because of
the purple rug. The one by my room is pink and red with big and little hearts
everywhere.
MASON
Yea, this one is the best. Its the only place with a lego man. His name is
Carlos.
JONNY
Thats a good name. Whats your name again?

MASON
Mason.

Cadena 3
JONNY
Thats a good one too.
He smiles.

MASON
Ive never met with anyone from the hearts Jonny.
JONNY
Its Jonny Angel. The Angel is important. My daddy says that the Angel
protects me.
MASON
Now that is the the best name of all. I wont forget, Jonny Angel.
MASON starts taking the lego castle apart and
is forming a heart out of the pieces.
MASON
So why do you come from there?
JONNY
Hyper-toe-fix my uh (searching)
My-op-thee
MASON
Whats that mean?
JONNY
Well
The stage goes dark except for a spotlight on
Jonny.
JONNY
Um?

JONNY

Is anyone there Houston?

"

PAUSE
Suddenly there is a crashing noise, blue and green
lights laser beams start to flash.

JONNY
There are some alien people trying to fight me out!

MAYDAY MAYDAY!

"
(revelation)
Oh yea!

"

JONNY whips a laser gun off of her belt, and starts

shooting back towards the audience.
JONNY

Jonny, youre our only hope!

She ducks, and rolls.

JONNY

Save us Jonny!

She shoots a laser, and from the looks of her face,

appears to have made a good shot.
JONNY

Not today buddy!

"

Suddenly, we hear ambulance sirens. Jonny has run

out of ammo. She frantically hits the gun trying to
get it to restart. She shoots one last beam, followed
by a boom. Jonny falls to the ground, and
quickly, all of the lights go dark. The beeping sound
has increased almost to a single screech. Suddenly

it stops and the lights come back up on JONNY and

MASON.
JONNY

So the doctors are going to put extra parts in right here to make it stronger
until I can get a new one.
She puts her hand on her heart and sticks her
chest out proudly.
MASON
Like robot parts?
JONNNY
Sure! But I dont have to move my arms like this.
JONNY does the robot dance with her arms.
Mason joins in and they laugh.
JONNY
Do you want to play with me?
MASON
No thanks. Carlos and I just wait.
JONNY
For what?
MASON
How old are you?
JONNY
Im five, but about to be six! Im going to have a birthday party. You should
come!
MASON
But Im eight. Isnt that too big for your party? Princesses, right?
JONNY

Cadena 6
No way
MASON
Then what kind of cake are you going to have?
JONNY
A spaceship.
MASON
I like spaceship cakes. Carlos too, see.
MASON puts Carlos close to her eyes. JONNY
reaches for him, but MASON pulls Carlos away.
JONNY takes the hint.
JONNY
What does it say?
MASON
NASA. It means hes an astronaut.

JONNY
Thats what I want to be! When Im at home and look up from my bed, I can
see stars everywhere on my wall! When you and Carlos come to my house,
you can see!

MASON
Wait, your birthday isnt going to be at the hospital?

"
JONNY
No silly, its at my house! I am going home as soon as I get the new parts!

MASON
Oh. Then I cant go.

JONNY

Dont you want to come see the stars?

MASON
I cant go outside.
JONNY
It wont be outside, it will be in my house!

MASON
I said I cant!
JONNY
Why not?
MASON
Because Im dying.

Beat.
JONNY
But you look okay to me.

MASON
Im not.
JONNY
Arent you scared?

MASON
To die?
JONNY
Yea. Where will you go?
MASON

I dont know, but maybe Ill get to meet my great grandpa. My mom talks
about him a lot. He was a sailor!
JONNY
Woah!
MASON
I know! But I can still tell it makes her sad that Ill have to go. When she
is sad, it makes me sad.
JONNY
Dont be sad!
MASON
Its hard.
JONNY
No its not! Come on!

JONNY lights up with an idea, hops to her feet,
and starts outlining giant fluffy figures with her
hands.

Cadena 9
JONNY
This one is a marshmallow, this one is a fluffy pillow. Oh! And this one is a
giant cotton ball!
MASON
What are you talking about?
She puts her arms out like she is steering a large
wheel. She begins to weave through her
invisible clouds; floating, rocking up and down,
side to side.
JONNY
The clouds! Mason, I can see the whole wide world! No one can be sad way
up here! Come aboard the ship!
MASON
Jonny Angel, you dont sail in the sky.
JONNY
Why not? Its blue like the sea. Plus, you are going to be a sailor of the sky in
Heaven.
MASON
Jonny
JONNY
Please!
MASON
Okay, just for a minute.
MASON struggles to get up and join her in play.
JONNY
First, think of something, the color of a cloud, anything! And then build it!
MASON starts to scoop the air hesitantly. He
drops it all into a pile and starts to mold the
cloud.

MASON
Scoop? Scoop. Scoop!
JONNY
What is it??
MASON
Ice cream!
JONNY
YUM!
They both begin to float again. After a minute,
JONNY starts to slow down, losing her breath a
bit. She sits down and winces.
JONNY
I feel tired.

MASON
Thats okay. Im always tired.

"
MASON sits down next to her.

"
JONNY
If you are dying and Im not, you have to be more tired right?

MASON
I dont think

JONNY
Wait, Mason, what do you call your sick?
MASON
Cancer.
JONNY
Yea, I dont have that.

MASON
My mommy says we all have to battle, just not the same monster.
JONNY
I wish you could come to my birthday party.
MASON
Me too, but maybe me, you, and Carlos can have more adventures while you
wait for your robot parts!
MASON is called for his treatment.
MASON
See you tomorrow cadet?
JONNY
Aye aye Captain!
She picks up the toy rocket from the ground. She
makes the windy sound from take- off as she
pushes it up towards the sky.
BLACKOUT.
SCENE 2

Cadena 12
MOM, DAD, and JONNY sit on the floor in the
playroom of the heart wing. DAD is fiddling
with the legos.
JONNY
Can we go to the purple playroom?
DAD
Not today kiddo. You have to be back in your room shortly to have some tests
done.
JONNY
Are they going to stick me again?
MOM
No need to worry sweetheart; it will be quick.
JONNY
Its okay! Im brave! I just want a blue bandaid this time.
MOM
Blue? Thats different. I thought we were starting a collection of all the purple
objects we could gather from the hospital.
JONNY
Masons favorite color is blue.
DAD
Who is Mason?

JONNY
My new friend. I told him I would see him in the playroom today. So can we?
MOM
OOooooOOO!
JONNY
Gross!
DAD
Yea, gross!
They giggle.
JONNY
He said the astronauts wear blue and red. So if I get blue, I can look like one
His best friend is an astronaut, so he knows. He even said Pluto sometimes
isnt a planet. Did you know that?!
MOM
No way!! Thats amazing!
DAD
I saw it on the news.
JONNY
Do you think Pluto is sad about not being a planet like his friends?
MOM
You should ask him!
MOM scurries over to the toy chest, and gets a
small bouncy ball. DAD is on his phone by now.

MOM
(In a low, goofy voice)
Hello Jonny! Im Pluto.
JONNY smiles.
JONNY
Mr. Pluto sir! Its Jonny Angel from Space NASA. Are you sad because your
friends are planets and you arent?
MOM
(In a low, goofy voice)
No way buddy! They are still my friends, no matter how different I am!
JONNY
Cool! Like how Mason and I are friends even though he has cancer and I
dont.
DAD and MOM look at each other.
DAD
Alright, we should probably get you back in bed.
JONNY
But Daddy, five more minutes! Play with us!
MOM
We have a little more time.
DAD
Dont you want to get better? So you can go home and play? Isnt this hospital
boring for you?

Cadena 15
JONNY
I do like home because thats where my birthday party is going to be with
Pumpkin. But, I can play anywhere!
The lights starts to change colors. The world is
transforming, until
DAD
We should really go back for your tests.
The lights go white abruptly.
JONNY
Okay
DAD gathers up the legos, and picks Jonny up
into his arms. MOM gives him an angry look.
BLACKOUT.
SCENE 3
MOM and DAD sit awkwardly in Jonnys
hospital room, she is asleep. No one wants to
start talking, but they both want to talk. They
finally whisper.

DAD
I cant imagine the way she does. I cant imagine these white walls being the
surface of the moon. I cant look at her and see a super hero. I see my little
girl. And right now I cant even imagine being grateful, but I also dont want
to think that it could be worse. I dont want to pretend I have the answers, or
the keys to the rocket ship. I dont want to let her down.

MOM
You wont. Its just how she copes, and she notices when you dont believe
what you are saying.
DAD
She cant notice. She sees the best in everything.
MOM

So let her.
DAD
But at which point is it my job to tell her the truth? To tell her that none of it is
real, and what is real is that she has to stay in bed, and take it easy for her
lifes sake.
MOM
Crushing her spirit wont help.
DAD

You think I want to do that!?

MOM

Thats not what I said.

DAD

WHY IS THIS
Jonny moves in her sleep. MOM and DAD take a breath , MOM fighting off
tears at this point.
DAD

"

Im sorry. Are you okay?

MOM
No.

Cadena 17

DAD
I think we just need to take a step back. We need to think about what might
happen next.
MOM
I dont want to do that. I just want to be here now.
DAD leans in to kiss her sweetly on the cheek.

DAD
I love you.

MOM

I love you too.

DAD
So its settled then. I wont tell her.

SCENE 5
JONNY comes running around the corner.
Mason is sitting. There is a soft blue wash on
the stage. She is reeling a fake fishing pole with
all of her might.
MASON
Okay okay.
Mason wiggles to his feet.
JONNY
Ive almost got him Captain!

Cadena 18
MASON
Be careful cadet! His teeth are HUGE! Ill get the net!
JONNY
This shark is going to pull us overboard!
MASON
Not on my watch! Ahoy!
Mason throws his arms wide, and mimes picking
up a really heavy shark.
JONNY
Alright! Your grandpa is going to feel so safe because the shark is gone. You
did it!
MASON
Thanks! My uncle said I have to be calm and strong, and then scoop him up!
Mason acts like he tosses the shark back in the
water.
MASON
Now be nice!
The blue wash fades up into white. Mason is
exhausted.
MASON
Do you play like this all of the time?
JONNY
Play like what?
MASON
Never mind.

Cadena 19
JONNY
Sometimes my dad tells me to slow my rollers. Is that what you mean?
MASON
Maybe.
JONNY
Does your daddy tell you that too?
MASON
I dont have a dad.
JONNY
What do you mean?
MASON
I just live with my mom.
JONNY
But do you get to visit him?
MASON
No. I dont have one.
JONNY
Is he in Heaven with your Great Grandpa?
MASON
I dont think so. My mom says that we have all we need between the both of
us. Plus, if my mom gets a flat tire, my uncle comes to fix it.

JONNY
Oh. Do you have brothers or sisters?

Cadena 20
MASON
No, but my uncle brings my cousin to my house sometimes. Do you have any?
JONNY
No.
MASON
See. Its the same almost. We are two and your family is three. But if Im not
here
JONNY
Is that why you are sad to die? Because then your mom will be one?
Mason looks down, fighting off tears.
MASON
I hear her talk to my uncle and the doctors. She cries a lot.
JONNY
But you will be a sailor with your Grandpa.
MASON
Yea. I think so. But, she doesnt believe that.
The lights fade blue again, and the sounds of the
deep sea can be heard.
JONNY
What if when they put the medicine in your arm, you tell her to pretend she is
on the boat with you; rocking back and forth, steering through a storm! Then
she can see how good of a captain you are!
The sounds get windy and lightening flashes.

MASON
My mom cant come with me! She wont even close her eyes. I always wake
up and she is staring at me.
JONNY
Tell her to try!
Hard lights up out of imagination.
MASON
The grown ups cant see it Jonny. They are too sad to see the adventures.
Sadder than me even.
JONNY
But my mommy and daddy play with me.
MASON
Do they ever say sorry?
JONNY
I dont know.
MASON
My mom always tells me she is sorry that I have to live here. But its not her
fault.
Beat.
JONNY
They are so sad.
MASON
See. I just dont want to leave her stuck.
JONNY sits and thinks.

Cadena 22
JONNY
Mason! What if your mom can be in my family? We can be four! Or five with
Carlos!
MASON
Carlos is coming with me.
JONNY
Okay! Then your mommy can come with us, and I can try and teach her how
to play. Ill teach all of the grown ups!
MASON
It will be too hard.
JONNY
Not harder than catching a shark!
Beat.
MASON
Promise youll try your best cadet?
JONNY
Promise.
BLACKOUT.
SCENE 6
The lights come up on JONNY and her DAD in
the playroom. JONNY is drawing pictures, and
her dad is reading a magazine.

JONNY
Where is Mommy?

DAD
She went home to take a shower and feed Pumpkin.
JONNY
How about this one!
DAD
Its gorgeous. What is it?
JONNY
Its me and Mason and Pumpkin riding a dolphin.
DAD
Wow. It looks great.
JONNY
Can I hang it up?
DAD
Not this time kiddo. We have to start taking the other ones down too.
JONNY
Why cant we leave them up for the next kid?
DAD
Dont you want to take home all of your pretty drawings to your recovery
room?
JONNY
Daddy! They arent pretty, they are cool!

Cadena 24
DAD
Well, the nurses have to make sure the room is all clean before the next kid
comes in.
JONNY
But my parts dont come in for two more days.
DAD
Jonny Angel.
JONNY
Okay. Tomorrow.
DAD
Deal.
She continues scribbling.
JONNY
Daddy, can I ask you a question?
DAD
Sure, Angel.
JONNY
Why do bad things happen to nice people?
Beat.
DAD
I dont know. But we are all doing everything to make sure you feel better
than ever. Then the doctors will find you a whole new heart, and

Im not talking about me. Its Mason. Im fine, but he is dying.

"
DAD
Oh.
JONNY
Dont you think he is too nice to die?
DAD
Uh well. Remember when we read that book about the star?
JONNY
Stella!
DAD
Thats the one. And the moon was sad, because Stella burned so bright so fast
that her light when out.
JONNY
Yea.
DAD
Even the brightest people in the world have to die Angel; sometimes they burn
fast and sometimes they burn slowly.
JONNY
I feel sad for his mom.

DAD
I know. Me too. I cant imagine.
JONNY
He will be safe with his great grandpa in Heaven, having the coolest
adventures aboard the ship!

DAD
Wha
JONNY
But his mom doesnt even have a two.
DAD
Slow down, what do you mean?
JONNY
Its just him and his mom. Im sad for her because he will be having fun and
she will be alone.
Its quiet for a moment.
JONNY
Can his mom be in our family?
DAD
Im sure she has someone else.
JONNY
Well his uncle and cousin, but thats it.

DAD
There, she has her brother.
JONNY
But I promised him Id teach her to close her eyes and imagine. Do you want
to try? I can be your teacher too!
DAD
Sure.
JONNY
Okay close your eyes really tight, and think of your favorite place.
DAD
Okay.
JONNY
Where is it?
DAD
Home.
JONNY
Dad! Thats boring! See! The grown ups need practice.
DAD
Well maybe we can go visit her sometimes.
JONNY
Okay deal!

Cadena 28
DAD
Now where did you learn to make a deal young lady?
He leans in to tickle her, she giggles, and jumps
into a hug. She pulls herself up and starts
frolicking around the hospital room. She is
pointing at her taped pictures on the walls near
her hospital bed. She grabs each one, and
reenacts it.
JONNY
Daddy look! Remember when that tiger climbed aboard my spaceship and
flew all the way to the moon with me. GGRRRRR
Oh! And when you and mommy jumped so high on the trampoline that you hit
your noggin on the sun! BOINK
And this time when I chased down the galaxy bandit for stealing Pluto from
the planets!
She starts running around; bouncing on one
foot, balancing on a tight rope, jumping through
hoops to catch the bandit.
DAD
Jonny slow down.
JONNY
But I almost have him!
DAD
You cant be
She stops quickly, and hunches over holding her
chest. DAD runs over to her. She begins to cry,
scrambling for breath.

Cadena 29
DAD
Jonny!
He runs to the nurse emergency button and
slams his palm into it. The lights turn dark and
intergalactic lights begin to flash.
END SCENE
SCENE 7
MASON knocks on Jonnys hospital room door.
Her dad answers.
MASON
Can Jonny play?
DAD
Im sorry Mason. She isnt here right now. There was an accident. The doctors
had to put her parts in earlier than expected.
MASON looks confused. His eyes start to swell with
tears.
MASON
But, Im the dying one, she has to be okay.
DAD
She should be just fine. I hope.
MASON wipes his eyes. DAD leans down to
Masons level, and put his hand on his shoulder.

"
DAD
What do you have there? Can I see it?
Mason stares down at the box.

Cadena 30
DAD
Can I see it, Please?
DAD invites MASON into the room. MASON looks
at Jonnys empty bed, then at the present with a
protective demeanor. He hands DAD the box to
open.
DAD
Wow, did you draw these?
MASON
Yea.
DAD
Whats this one?
MASON
Thats me and Jonny and Carlos.
DAD examines each drawing.
MASON
We are in Heaven. See the clou
DAD loses his breath for a moment at the thought of
Heaven.
DAD
She is going to love them.
MASON
You really think so?
DAD
Of course.

Cadena 31
MASON
Do you think you could take it for her to open at her birthday party? These are all
of our adventures. I dont want her to forget about them when she goes to live at
home again.
DAD
UhWhy dont you come to her recovery room in a few days, you can give them
to her yourself.
MASON
She isnt having a birthday party?
DAD
We cant go home for her birthday. She was never going to be well enough in time
for a party.
MASON
Thats all she talks about! Why didnt you tell her? She is going to be so sad.

"
Beat.
DAD
I know. I feel sad too. I should've told her the truth. But if you come, maybe it will
cheer her up. You can give her the drawings and have some cake.

"
MASON
Spaceship cake?
DAD
Absolutely.
MASON
Can I bring my mom?

"

DAD
Of course!
MASON
Then we can have our own party!... WAIT! I think I have an idea. Can we go to
my playroom sir?
END OF SCENE

SCENE 8
JONNY is laying in bed. Mason comes in to visit
her. He is wheeling around an oxygen machine.
He sits next to her and takes off his mask.
MASON
Hey there cadet. You made it back from Mars.
JONNY winces at the pain in her chest.
MASON
I brought you something.
He hands her a blue patch. It reads NASA,
and looks like the crayon carbon copy of
Carlos.
MASON
I thought that since you were an astronaut, you needed a badge.
He puts it on her sleeve.
JONNY
I think Im dying like you. I have one of those now too.
She points at the tank.

Cadena 33
MASON
Thats okay. You need air in space.
JONNY
I cant be an astronaut. Im not strong enough.
MASON
They finally put the robot parts in it.
JONNY
What if it breaks before we find my new heart? I cant even have my party.
What if I cant ever have any birthday parties because I never return from the
mission! Im scared!
MASON
Dont be scared. Look at me remember... Im going to get to be a sailor
captain. If you have to come with me, I bet great grandpa would like an extra
captain on his ship.
JONNY takes a deep breath
JONNY
Are you sure?
MASON
Yea! You can be a princess, an angel, an astronaut, or even a sailor captain like
me. It doesnt matter if you are here or there.
He points up to the sky.
JONNY
Maybe I can just skip my birthday party and go straight to space. Im tired.

"
MASON
Not on my watch cadet! We made the mission, and you have to finish it. Just
get some rest and Ill be back in a couple of days.
END SCENE.

SCENE 9
JONNY sits up in her hospital bed, clearly
feeling a bit better. DAD and MOM are shuffling
mysteriously.
MOM
Are you feeling okay?
JONNY
Yea, Im just sad.
MOM
Why honey?
JONNY
I wanted to have my birthday in the backyard with Pumpkin, but I am stuck
here.
MOM
What about that trick you were teaching daddy a couple of weeks ago? Just
close your eyes tight, and you can be any
JONNY
It doesnt work anymore. Im too tired all of the time.

"
MOM
That will go away my love.
DAD
Smile kiddo! You are six years old today!

"

Cadena 35
JONNY
Nuh-uh. You cant have a birthday in a hospital.
MOM
Sure you can. We are going to have one right here. Me, you, and daddy.
There is a knock on the door. JONNY is
surprised.
MOM
Well, maybe not just the three of us.
DAD opens the door. Mason in a wheelchair,
with his oxygen, is wheeled in by his mom. A
nurse wheels in an empty chair.
MASON
Jonny Angel, its the captain. We need you for a very important mission.

"
JONNY
Mason?!
MASON
Hop aboard the ship!
DAD picks up Jonny and loads her into the
wheelchair. The nurses wheel them down two
hallways and into the playroom with the purple
rug. Upon entering, the galactic lighting is
back: pinks, purples, and blues. The ceiling
twinkles with shooting stars. The lights come up
on the same stars in the sky, except portrayed by
childrens drawings. Also decorating the room
are the drawings MASON did of the clouds he
and JONNY built. The party room is a artistic
representation of when they went sailing in the
sky for the first time.

Cadena 36
JONNY
A birthday party!!!! Thank you Mommy! Thank you Daddy!
DAD
Actually Jonny Angel, this was Masons gift for you.
JONNY
You did this for me?
MASON
Do you like it?
JONNY
Daddy get some paper!
DAD come back with paper and crayons.
JONNY starts scribbling furiously. She flings up
her drawing over her head proudly.
JONNY
Its us at my birthday party! Look, Im in my NASA suit and you have your
sailor hat!
MASON
Put it on the wall!
JONNY
Everyone draw one for my birthday wall!
MOM wheels her over to the wall, and JONNY
shows her where to tape it amongst the stars.
JONNY
Mason, let me see yours!
He smiles as he holds it forward for her to see.

Cadena 37
MASON
You and Grandpa! Come put it in the Heaven!
MASONs mom wheels him over and puts it up
for him.
JONNY
Daddy, mommy, now you.
DAD
We just draw ourselves?
JONNY
You draw whatever you want to be, wherever you want to be!
DAD
But Im already who I want to be, your daddy.
He kisses her on the forehead. She gets
embarrassed.
JONNY
No, daddy, remember what I taught you!
DAD
Oh right!!
MOM and DAD scribble.
MOM
Im AwesomeMom!
MOM gets into a super hero pose. DAD holds
up his drawing proudly.
DAD
Stella!

Cadena 38

"
JONNY
Yay Daddy! You did it! You imagined!
He hugs her. They go over to place their
drawings on the wall.
JONNY
Look! Mason! I taught daddy! I can teach your mom too! Missuh, Masons
mom. You should come on the adventure too!
MASONs mom joins in with a drawing, and
places it on the wall.
MASON
Mission accomplished cadet.
They marvel at the wall for a moment.
MOM
I think its time to blow out the candles.
MASON tugs on his mom and whispers
something in her ear. She walks off and returns
with a present. She wheels him over to her.
MASON
Here.
MOM
Okay, cake later. Got it.
JONNY wiggles open the box.
JONNY
No way Captain! Its Carlos!

MASON
Happy birthday Jonny Angel.
JONNY
But MasonCarlos is your best friend.
MASON
No. Youre my best friend.
JONNY jumps to hug him, still gentle though.
MASON
Besides, he is an astronaut. He wouldnt like my sail ship as much as your
rocket ship. And he has a few more missions to accomplish without me.
JONNY
This is the best! I promise Ill take care of him.
MASON
I know. Now you will have five!
JONNY
Five family!
Beat.
JONNY

in a seat with buttons projected on the wall
around her.

HOUSTON
CCCSSHHH Houston to Jonny Angel, we are ready for landing.
The buttons begin to light up different colors:
purple, orange, red, yellow, green, and blue.
HOUSTON
CCCCSSHHH Hit the orange button to pack every drawing you drew.
CCCSSHHH Now hit the purple button to say thanks to everyone who took
care of you. Now hit the yellow button and smile! Youre almost home! And
last, the blue button, because youll never have to do this alone. CCSSSHHH
JONNY
Aye Aye Houston!
The entire cast comes onto the stage holding
drawings of what their best imagined world.
After a minute of music from the beginning
HOUSTON

JONNY hits the green button, and the lights turn
