Safety First

Avoiding Collisions
ABS (Anti-Braking System): Wheels are
prevented from locking -> causing
skidding by an active computer system
that rapidly pumps the brakes,
stopping distance is increased.
EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution): In
the event of an emergency stop, this
system automatically distributes
braking force to all tyres to the
maximum until the ABS initiates.
ESC (Electronic Vehicle Stability):
Accelerometers in the vehicle sense its
behaviour. If a car begins to skid while
cornering, the brake pressure is applied
to a wheel/s and regains stability in the
car.
Speed Limits/Humps: Making accidents
less likely to occur and reduces injuries
when accidents do occur, due to slower
speed.
Road Design/Traffic Laws: Decreases
the likelihood of a collision occurring.
Reduces the number of accidents due
to more restrictions on the road.

Reducing Effects of Collision

Crumple Zones: Dissipating energy of
an impact and slowing the deceleration
of the car.
Air Bags: Automatically inflated with
compressed air within 1/100th of a
second of an impact to cushion the
passenger.
Seat Belts: Inertia-reel seat belts lock
to keep passengers tightly pressed to
their seat when a car decelerates
rapidly.
Side-impact bars: Strong bars inside
the door frame offer passengers some
protection of a side a impact event.
Engine Block: In the event of impact,
the engine block slides safely under the
passenger safety cell.
