ELE 101 Lesson Reflection 4

Title

Rat-a-tat-tat book exploring tone color

Objective

Students will use their vocabulary words to discuss and


describe the book after reading to reinforce the meaning
of those vocabulary words.
I can use my vocabulary words to describe the tone color
and dynamics of the Rat-a-tat-tat book.

This can easily be used in conjunction with an Art lesson


regarding simple shapes and colors. Each member of the
band is made out of a simple shape (described on the last
page of the book) and using the same color palate. The
students can even make their own band member out of
these shapes!

Materials

Rat-a-tat-tat book
Art lesson would require shapes/colors of some sort
whether theyre cut outs or drawing would vary
depending on what you wanted to do.

Go over tone color and dynamics vocab words


and their meaning, have students describe them.
Read rat-a-tat-tat book aloud where all students
can see illustrations, making sure to speak loudly
and softly as indicated by the words in the book
to represent tone color and dynamics effectively.
Ask prompting questions about the dynamics and
different tone colors relating to the story. Have
them talk about how your voice got louder and
softer and the pictures got bigger and smaller.
To connect with an older audience, you could
separate them into groups and have one group
be the thump thump and the other be rat-atat-tat and demonstrate the sound and how
loud/soft you are at their desks while you read
the story again.
For younger students, read the story again and
have them say the soft/loud thump, thump,
thump and soft/loud rat-a-tat-tat with you.
