LAB EXPERIMENT: Le Chateliers Principle

Objective:
The objective of this experiment is to determine the effect of pH in
chemical equilibrium.

Materials:

600-ml beaker
Glass funnel
500-ml Erlenmeyer flask
100-ml graduated cylinder
Glass dropper
Top balance

pH paper
Filter paper
1M HCl
1M NaOH
Red bougainvillea flowers

Discussion:
The samples of each experiment showed a difference in pH levels.
They also showed a difference in color which is a sign of a change in
equilibrium. The first sample, the extract had a pH of 6 which was a
balance between acids and basics and it had a distinct color of red. The
second sample, the extract added with 1M of HCl, had a lower pH of 4 and
its color changed from red to dark red. The third sample, the extract
added with NaOH, had a higher pH of 8 and a lighter shade of red
compared to the extract.
Therefore, we can conclude that the pH of a chemical solution
affects the chemical equilibrium.

Questions:
1. The pH of the extract increases when added with NaOH instead
of HCl.
2. The observed pH varies in each sample. The pH of the extract in
the first sample is at 6 because there is a balance between the
acids and bases. In the second sample, HCl is added to the
extract and since HCl is acidic, the overall pH lowers and it makes
the second sample acidic. In the third sample, NaOH is added
and since NaOh is basic, the overall pH increases and it makes
the third sample basic.

3. a.) Inert gases will not react with the products and reactants so it
will have no effect on the product/reactant ratio, and therefore, it
will have no effect on equilibrium.
b.) Since the drying agent removes water or H2O which is in the
product side, the equilibrium will shift to the right.
