Basic Instructions for MLA Citations

Here is the format for different types of sources. You can use this sheet as a guideline for
building your own Works Cited Page.
Book Citation Format
Lastname, Firstname. Title of Book. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium
of Publication.
Example:
Rowling, J.K. Harry Potter and The Sorcerers Stone. Scholastic, 1997. Print.
Magazine & Database Article Citation Format
Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical Day Month Year: pages. Medium of publication.
Example:
"Robot." Britannica School. Encyclopdia Britannica, Inc., 2015. Web. 29 Nov. 2015.
<http://school.eb.com/levels/middle/article/276749#>
Web Site Citation Format
Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). Name of Site. Version number. Name of
institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource
creation (if available). Medium of publication. Date of access.
Example:
Billington, James. The Civil Rights Act of 1964: A Long Struggle For Freedom. Library of
Congress. Web. November 29, 2015.
Notes:

All citations should be in alphabetical order by authors last name; do not separate
different types of sources from each other. You are making one list.
If there is no author, use the title in alphabetical order, since that will be the first thing
listed in the citation.
