About Sickle Cell


Sickle Cell disease is a disease from or of the hobgoblin.
The defective hemoglobin causes the red blood cells to
become stiff instead of flexible and form a sickle or
crescent shape.

Sickle Cell is a Recessive gene, only those with ss not Ss have the disease.
Malaria is a dominant gene, so if a person only has one recessive gene for
Sickle Cell, they are protected against the infection.

Sickle Cell is Autosomal recessive gene, which means that anyone can get it
when it is in their bloodline, this disease is inherited and not sexually passed
along.

The way to differ normal and infected genes is of the way that they look, the
infected cells are crescent or sickle shaped. The mutation occurs on
chromosome 11.

Facts
In the United States, sickle cell affects about 70,000100,000 Americans.
Sickle Cell is found evenly between genders.
Sickle cell is mainly found in African Americans, the ratio
is 1/500, also sickle cell can be of any age.

Symptoms
Pain in bones and joints, sudden pains at the chest,
dehydration, dizziness, fatigue, fever, low oxygen in the
body, peeing is difficult, delayed puberty, infection,
shortness of breath, dysfunctional organs.

Testing?
A simple blood test is the way to see if you have the
disease.

Treatment
Sickle cell is or can be a life ending disease, there is no
active way to cure this disease. But prescription drugs,
blood transfusions, and sometimes bone marrow
transplants can work.

Other facts
Children with SCD are 200 to 400 times more likely to
have a stroke
Individuals with SCD need regular blood transfusions
SCD occurs in 1/1000 Hispanics in the US
