Our questionnaire results from students

and teachers around our school

Me and Jonny decided to conduct a survey to find the

opinions of our fellow school pupils and teachers. The
information we found is portrayed in pie charts. Most of our
results were what we expected but there were some strange
results.
Do you think that the price of healthy food
should be lowered

We found that 90% of people we tested thought that the price of healthy food should be
lowered. This evidence confirmed what we thought.
Do you think healthy or unhealthy food would be

• I thought that this was our most surprising result because I am

sure that most people would have the sense to see that healthy
food is much more beneficial in the long term.

• This was just what we expected, as we feel that this would alter the
percentage of people who are obese in our country dramatically.
Overall do you think these changes will have a positive or
negative effect on our community

No difference

• This confirmed our thoughts that almost everyone thought that

our campaign will have a positive affect to our community
Summary of our results
• I thought that most people were split on which type of food; healthy or
unhealthy would be bought more if they are at the same price. In my opinion
healthy food would be bought more because almost everyone knows that it
much better for you than unhealthy foods. However I can see other peoples’
point of view that it might be the other way around because almost everyone
prefers the taste of unhealthy food!
• The main problem with our campaign is that we know that it would be very
difficult to convince people to buy more healthy food, not only that but
lowering the price of healthy food is a challenging task in itself.
• We must have a campaign on this issue because, we personally think that the
price of healthy food (being so high) has the biggest impact on the
percentage of people who are obese. Unhealthy food is so tasty and
convenient for them because it is cheap.
• If our campaign title is: Should the price of healthy food be lowered?
It would be much more appealing to people than:
Should the price of unhealthy food be lowered?
Why are healthy foods so expensive?

The reason that healthy foods are so expensive is simple economics. Even though recent trends have
pointed to an increased demand of healthy, natural and organic food, supply is still very low and the cost
to produce them is very high.
One important factor that makes food healthy is freshness. Fruits and vegetables can only grow in
specific climates of the world and only at certain times of the year. Usually this climate area is far from
your house, and even though it is only grown for a few months out of the year, is demanded all the time.
We want to eat kiwis and strawberries all year round, right? To make this a reality, companies need to
store the food in giant air conditioned warehouses and ship the food across the world to meet local
demand. As you can imagine, this is a very expensive process and the cost is passed onto the consumer.
On the other hand, unhealthy foods are grown (or raised) in huge quantities. For example corn that is
used to make high fructose corn syrup (the ingredient that adds sugar to everything including candy,
fruit juice and soda) is grown all around the world and is heavily subsidized in this country.
Manufacturers have a cheap supply of sugar that they use to make all sorts of unhealthy foods.
Until the demand of healthy food rises above the demand for unhealthy foods, the supply won't expand
and the prices won't come down. Fortunately, with the country starting to notice that buying expensive
food now can prevent expensive hospital bills later, the mood is changing

, really illustrates the problem that we were talking about.
The prices of healthy food have soared up in the past twenty
years, where as the price of unhealthy food has gone down!
