Expository Writing

For the next few weeks we will be working on expository writing. Expository writing is
a style of writing that is designed to give information and facts on a topic. This type of
writing is the genre that will be used most often in your school careers and into your
working lives. You will use this type of writing in research papers, reports, essays, labs,
comprehension responses in emails, job applications and letters.
The key to effective expository writing is that it doesnt have to be boring! We will be
working on building strong writing that is vivid, informative, clear and lively with strong
voice.. To be successful you must clearly understand your topic, develop a strong topic
sentence, have specific ideas that you present with supporting details and a firm conclusion.

Some of the forms of expository writing that we will be using will be descriptive,
compare and contrast, sequence/ chronological order, problem and solution and
argumentative. As we move forward we will start expanded our writing as well. Following
the Christmas break our paragraphs will become three paragraph pieces.
