Autobiography

SinceayoungageIhavelovedandhadaninterestinart.I
havealwaysfeltlikeartwasawayformetoexpressmyself,let
myguarddown,andbecreative.TogiveanexampleofhowmuchI
enjoyeddrawingwhenIwasyounger,wheneverIwouldhavea
friendcomeoverorviceversainsteadofaskingthemifthey
wantedtoplayagameIusuallyaskedheydoyouwanttocolor
anddraw?.Mymomusedtotellmeastoryabouthowonetimeshe
waslookingatsomeflowersIhaddrawnandnoticedhowatthe
age5Iwasshadingandaddingtonalvaluetothem;thisstood
outtoherthatbeingsoyoungIwasalreadydisplaying
techniquesinmydrawings.Andsincethenshehasalwaysbeenmy
numberonesupporterinencouragingmetopursueart.
Mostofmyearlydrawingsconsistedofmyself,shapessuch
asheartsandstars,interiors,andDisneyrelatedthemeslike
princessesandballgowns.AtthetimeIknewonedayIwasgoing
toeventuallyworkforDisneysodrawingprincessesseemedlike
thebestpractice.OnceIwasschoolageartwasofferedtomein
elementaryandmiddleschool,butitwasintermixedwithmusicso
Ineverreallygotgoodinstructionsorlessons.AtthetimeI
honestlydidnotknowwhatIwasmissingbecausethatseemedlike

thenormtome.Howeverthatdidntstopmefrompursuingdrawing
orleadmetobeuninterestedinart.ItoldmymomthatIreally
wantedtotakeartlessonsbecauseIthinkinsideIknewIwas
notfulfillingmydesiretocreateartatschool.Sowithsome
researchmymomenrolledmeforanafterschoolclassatLakewood
ArtsAcademyinDallas.Itwasthereundertheinstructionof
BarleyVogelthatIstartedtoexploreandunderstandthe
fundamentalsofartmaking,andbegantoreallybeinspiredand
feelsupported.Itwillalwaysbeaspecialplacebecauseitwas
thefirsttimeIwasnotonlyaroundateachertolovedtoteach
artbutaroundotherchildrenaswellwhosharedmysame
interest.
OnceHighschoolstarted,everyyearIchosetohaveoneof
myelectivesbeart.Iprobablyshouldrefertothisperiodof
timeasthedeadyearsbecauseeventhoughIwasinartclass,
nothingmuchhadchangedbetweenwhatIdidntlearnin
elementaryandmiddleschooltillnow.Asitseemsalotofart
classesareinhighschoolthiswasablowoffclass.Itisnot
thatIbecameuninterestedinartduringthistimebutIstarted
tobeinvolvedinotheractivitiesanddidntputasmuchtime
andeffortintoworkingonartinoroutsideofclass.Looking
backIwishIhadanartteacherthatactuallytaughtand

influencedme,butthatwasnotthecaseandIfeelthatis
partiallythereasonIdidntcontinuetopracticeasmuch.
IlaterbeganmycollegecareeratCollinCollegewhereI
enrolledinmyfirstDrawingIcourse.Itwasinthisclassthat
Idiscoveredmyloveforartalloveragain.Ireallystartedto
understandandlearnthebasicprinciplesandelementsofart,
alongwithtechniquesandskillsthathadreallyupuntilnow
nevertrulybeentaughttomeinsuchdetail.Iwassoexcited
andpassionateaboutartagainandIcreditalotofthistomy
professorEileneCarver.Sheisoneofthemostinfluentialart
teachersIhavehadthepleasureoflearningfrom.
Icontinuedtotakeafewmorestudioartclassesunderher
instructionaswellassomeothergreatteachers.Istartedto
honeinonsubjectmatterIlikedaswellaslearnaboutand
studydifferentartist.Duringthistimeofrenewedinterestin
artIfoundabookthatwasgiventomebackinhighschoolfull
ofGeorgiaOKeeffesartwork.Ivealwayslovednatureand
flowerssoIwentthroughashortperiodoffocusingonthem.
AfterthatIhadafewmoreartclassesleft,whichIsplit
betweenCollinCollegeandUNT.ItwasduringthistimethatI
gottoexperimentwithmediumsIhadntusedbeforelikebronze,
metal,wood,clayandprintmaking.Itwasasifawholenewworld

hadopeneduptomebecauseupuntilthenIwasnevergiventhe
opportunitytoworkwithothermediumslikethose.
OverallIamthankfulforthepositiveandnegative
experiences,becauseIhavelearnedfromboth.Withoutthe
negativeonesIwouldnotappreciatehowimportantitistobea
goodqualityteacher.Andthepositiveoneshaveonlyinspired
andpushedmemoreintopursuingwhatIampassionateabout.
