COLLEGE OF ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (C of E&ME) (2) rel KS iss} 55 COLLEGE OF ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (C of EXME), RAWALPINDI College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (C of E&IVE) aspires to be a research-intensive institution. I aims at steering research activity towards industrial product development for the social and economic well-being of the nation, MISSION ‘The College is making all-out efforts to strengthen its research culture, in order tocreate an enabling ‘environment for industrial growth and development. The whole fabric of undergraduate and postgraduate ‘education is woven to achieve this goal by synergising state-of-the-art-research facilities at the College. INTRODUCTION ‘The College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering ‘was established in 1957 as a polytechnic institute at Quetta. The College was moved to its present premises. in 1984. With the estabishment of NUST in 1991, the College became one of its constituent colleges. The College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering i situated along the Grand Trunk Road, at the Rawalpindi-Islemabad nexus. Its open landscape makes itan ideal place for an academic campus. A fascinating locale and a congenial environment are indeed the hallmarks of this College. It the largest College of NUST in terms of PhD faculty, student enrollment, diversity of academic programmes, research activities, space, infrastructure and facilities. The College attained 150-9001 certification in 1999, ISO 9001-2000 certification in 2003 and ISO 9001-2008 in May 2009. It has earned accolades in quality assurance and Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) accreditation evaluation. The College offers degree programmes in diverse undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, mainly in the disciplines of Electrical, Mechanical, Computer and Mechatronics Engineering. The College lays great ‘emphasis on indigenous research in which the faculty and students remain zestfully involved. As a result, quantum research material is produced annually. The feculty mostly comprises of eminent research scholars, who regularly participate in conferences and seminars, both at home and abroad. state-of-the-art spacious library, equipped with around 60,000 books, an e-lbrary section and a good number of latest PCs with wireless internet connection, facilitate students and faculty in their ongoing engineering research. Machine Laboratory The Machine Lab is used to carry out research and practical work related to speed control of motors; ‘operation of motors, generators, transformers; use of volt-metres, ampere-metres, watt-metres; as well as power supplies anc measurement techniques. Digital Signal Processing Laboratory ‘The development of DS? algorithms at the software level ‘and the implementation of DSP algorithrrs with the help (of DSP processors (TMS320c3X) are the majortasks carried out here. Embedded Systems Laboratory ‘The Embedded Systems Lab houses state-of-the-art equipment for experimentation in Digital Logi Microprocessors, Microcontrollers and Digital Systems Design Itis also used extensively by undergraduate students for their projects. Control Systems Laboratory Experiments related to control systems are undertaken in the Control systems Laboratory. ‘Communication Systems Laboratory Experiments related to analogue and digital Communication and other sophisticated communication systems are carried outin this laboratory. Laboratories at the Mechanical Engineering Department The Mechanical Engineering Department is well-equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and infrastructural facilities in related areas. The labs include: Materials Laboratory The Materials Lab is mainly used by undergraduate students to perform experiments related to Mechanics Cf Materials-| and Mechanics of Materials-l. Some of the equipment instlled includes asymmetrical cantilever apparatus, thin cylinder apparatus, combined bending and torsion apparatus, tensile testing machine, beam ‘apparatus, torsion machine, creep measurement apparatus, compression of spring apparatus, extension of spring apparatus, shear force apparatus, flywheel apparatus and bending moment epparatus, Fluid Mechanics Laboratory The Hydraulics Lab is mostly used by undergraduate students to carry out experiments related to Fluid Machanics-| and Fluid Mechanics-ll. Dynamics and Controls Laboratory The Dynamics and Controls Lab is generally used by undergraduate students to perform experiments related to engineering dynamics, control systems and the theory ‘of machines, The equipment installed in the laboratory comprises process control simulator, static and dynamic balancing apparatus, gyroscope apparatus, centrifugal force apparatus, governor apparatus and journal friction apparatus. Heat Transfer Laboratory The Heat Transfer Lab is mainly used by undergraduate students to perform experiments related to heat and ‘mass transfer, refrigeration and air-conditioning. The equipment installed in the lab includes a heat transfer bench, force convection apparatus, basic refrigeration cycle unit, heat transfer rig, multi-purpose air duct, compressor cutting grinder, charging station, refrigeration model, heat pump, analyser, heat exchanger and absorption retrigeration system model. Computer-aided Engineering Laboratory Undergraduate students during their study of AutoCAD and computer-aided engineering undertake practical assignmentsin the CAE Lab to explore mechanical engineering software such as AutoCAD, ansys, proE, visual nastran, MSC adams, etc. The equipment available at the lab includes computers (P-IV), a laser printer and 9 colour plotter. Postgraduate students also use ths facility during their research work for computational purposes. Vibration and Stress Analysis Laboratory ‘This labs used by both undergraduate and postgraduate students for research purposes. The lab equipment comprises a model 241-084 transmission polariscope, a model-031 reflection polariscope, a 2307 photo elasticity oven, a microscope X-2000 with accessories and micro hardness tester. Solar Laboratory Undergraduate and postgraduate students engaged in research related to solar PV and soiar thermal systems avail the Solar Laboratory facilites. Laboratories at the Computer Engineering Department The Department of Computer Engineering has the following laboratories: Embedded Systems Laboratory ‘This lab is used for software development using different data structures and algorithms; implementation of operating system structures; design and development of databases; testing and validation using software engineering methodologies; computer graphics applications; and applications of DSP, DIP, MBD and DSO. Computer Networks Laboratory This lab is used forthe implementation of structures, networking solutions and software-oriented projectsin professional languages as wells the design and development of software. Project Laboratory This lab is used for parallel processing applications, architecture design applicators, micro-processor/embedded circuits implementation, implementation using FPGA, modelling and simulation, mide layer development for HLA and multiprocessor-based ASIC design verification. Computing Laboratory ‘Activites inthis lab are designed using ACAD, algorithms andc/C+ programmes. Here students work on various application packages for the engineering practice module, digital communication assignments, computer graphics applications, matnematica assignments, SPce, MATLAB and AutoCAD. Networking and Project Laboratory This lab is decicated to the preparation of servers, implementation of networking topologies and structures, software development projects, computer interfaces, installation and configuration of different ‘operating systems, DLO circuits through verilog and design work for final year projects DSP and DSD Laboratory This lab is meant for class projects/assignments related 10 DSD, implementation and testing of computer architecture algorithms, use of verilog/HDL, nardare/sof-ware co-desig, system design using verlog and HDL tools, design of mul layer digital systems and designing of PCB. Image Processing Laboratory This lab is decicated to software development for MS theses, implementation and testing of OS structures, programming for numerical analysis and solutions, LAN/WAN models and protocols, DSP, DIP. databases, software engineering applications, parallel processing applications and digital system design using verilog and HDL tools. Laboratories at the Mechatronics Engineering Department Details of various facilities available in this department are asfollows: Robotics Laboratory ‘The Department of Mechatronics has a robotics research facility equipped with numerous state-of the-art industrial robots, including @ GEC arc-welding robot and the ABB industrial robot with their control systems and PLC trainer's. In addition, the lab also holds different types of mobile robots, including differential drive robots, a peoplebot and a crawling robot. Gircuit Design Laboratory ‘The Circuit Design Laboratory is well-equipped with all the necessary tools and devices required o test and develop both analog and digital electronic circuits ie function generators, oscilloscopes, micro-controller trainer boards etc. CAM/CAD Laboratory ‘The CAD/CAM research facilty provides students with an ideal platform for modelling and simulation of mechanical systems and processes using state-of-the-art software, The software library includes, ANSYS, ‘AutoCAD, AMD, pro-engineer and DELCAM. In addition the lab also contains specialised software used by postgraduate students. Industrial Automation Laboratory ‘The Industrial Automation Lab contains the latest CNC machines manufactured by Denford, UK. These machines include a 3-anis vertical machining centre and a2-Avis lathe. In addition, the lab also houses a fully functional computer-integrated manufacturing that includes a programmable conveyer and two programmable manipulators. National Engineering Robotics Contest (NERC) The idea of National Engineering Robetics Contest (NERC) was initiated by the Department of Mechatronics. the contest provides a platform to engineering students, teachers ard supervisors from all cover Pakistan, to participate in a contest of the ‘mult-cisciplinary field of robotics with a view to expanc the awareness of this field and itsapplicatonsin the country. The theme of the competition isto build an autonamous mabile robot, which should be able to ‘move in a specified arena and complete predefined tasks, The task is uploaded on NERC website a year prior tothe next year’s competition. The competition started back in the year 2003. The contest has now become a mega event in the yearly calendar of the College. itis well on its way to transcend geographical boundaries and become an international contest.
