Case 22: "Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in 2008: Management's Initiatives to Transform the Company and Curtail
Wal-Mart Bashing," by Arthur A. Thompson, C367C400.
The Wal-Mart case lays out Wal-Mart's corporate history and phenomenal growth record, its strategy to
become the largest discount retailer in the world via a low-cost leadership strategy, the companys
approaches to strategy execution, and the transformative initiatives that CEO Lee Scott launched to
curtail media bashing of Wal-Mart. Study the Wal-Mart case carefully, and write a case analysis report as
described below.

Case Analysis Report

Wal-Mart senior management, concerned about the raft of issues and problems swirling about the
company, has asked you to evaluate and critique their efforts to transform Wal-Mart and combat WalMart bashing and to make recommendations for further improving the way the company conducts its
business.
Please prepare an 810 page case analysis report to Wal-Mart management detailing your thoughts
and analysis regarding both the actions taken and needed to address the issues and challenges
facing the company. In addition to using the Wal-Mart case study provided in the textbook, research
the company further to find any relevant events that have transpired since the writing of the case
study. Use the company's Web site, Internet search engines such as Google, online data services, or
other sources to locate the latest articles about the company including press releases and current
financial information. Your recommendations to Wal-Mart management should be thoroughly
supported and forcefully argued, and you should demonstrate command and use of the concepts and
tools of analysis studied throughout the course.
In writing your case analysis report, follow the textbook publisher's "Guide to Case Analysis." Also, be
sure to cite all sources and to format the report according to APA guidelines (see also Documentation
Rules and Citation Styles).
