Description
When diagnosing the patients, speech-language pathologists communicate with their
patients in order to assess their levels of speech or language difficulty. They determine the
extent of their communication problems through basic reading and vocalizing tasks to
identify treatment options. Speech-language pathologists treat patients through teaching
them how to make sounds and improve their voices, alternative communication methods,
improving their ability to read or write, or develop and strengthen muscles used to
swallow. They may also counsel patients and families on coping with communication
disorders.

Write reports and maintain proper documentation of information, such as healthcare

or billing records or caseload activities, including the initial evaluation, treatment,

language, swallowing disorders, or inappropriate pitch or harsh voice problems, based

on own assessments and recommendations of physicians, psychologists, or social

workers.
Supervise or collaborate with therapy team.
Educate patients and family members about various topics, such as communication
techniques or strategies to cope with or to avoid personal misunderstandings.
Participate in conferences, training, continuing education courses, or publish research
results to share professional knowledge.
Administer hearing or speech and language evaluations, tests, or examinations to
patients to collect information on type and degree of impairments, using written or
oral tests or special instruments.
Monitor patients' progress and adjust treatments accordingly.
Evaluate hearing or speech and language test results, or medical or background
information to diagnose and plan treatment for speech, language, fluency, voice, or
swallowing disorders.
Instruct clients in techniques for more effective communication, such as sign
language, lip reading, or voice improvement.
Teach clients to control or strengthen tongue, jaw, face muscles, or breathing
mechanisms.

Communication skills. Speech-language pathologists need to communicate test

results, diagnoses, and proposed treatments in a way that patients and their families
can understand.
Compassion. Speech-language pathologists work with people who are often frustrated
by their difficulties. Speech-language pathologists must be able to support
emotionally demanding patients and their families.
Critical-thinking skills. Speech-language pathologists must be able to adjust their
treatment plans as needed, finding alternative ways to help their patients.
Detail oriented. The work of speech-language pathologists requires intense

concentration because they must closely listen to what patients are able to say and
then help them improve their speech.
Listening skills. Speech-language pathologists must listen to a patients symptoms and
problems to decide on a course of treatment.
Patience. Speech-language pathologists may work with people who achieve goals
slowly and need close attention.
