N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Carly Bove

Date of Activity: 10/3/15 and 10/23/15

Faculty name: Darlene Lacroix

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):
The first activity I participated in was the mass casualty training course that occurred at the fire
house downtown. This class discussed the issues of mass shootings, bombing events, and many
others for health care providers specifically and talked about what you should do in these
situations as a health care provider to ensure the best outcome.
The Second activity I participated in was the leadership intensive seminar that the college of
nursing hosted. The guest speaker Mary Jo Kreitzer spoke on the aspects of leadership and the
importance of personal well being of a leader has on an organization and what the key concepts
are of an organized leadership are. She also talked about where breakdowns in leadership may
occur and the ways to help fix these areas of weakness.
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
The Mass casualty training was held at the fire house down town and lasted for 4 hours.
The Leadership intensive seminar occurred at the college of nursing and lasted 4.25 hours.
Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).
Both of these experiences taught me a lot. I now know exactly what to look for as far as
leadership possibilities in my future career as a nurse and by knowing what kinds of leadership
roles work and do not, I will better be able to base my decision on what organization I would like
to work for in the future. I also hope to be able to use the leadership skills I learned in this
seminar myself as a leader to help restructure the leadership aspects of the hospital I work for in
the future. I also really enjoyed the mass casualty training seminar because I feel like a lot of the
information we discussed is not something you typically learn in nursing school and this class
helped to provide me with the confidence that should anything go wrong in everyday life where I
needed to avoid a shooter or make a tourniquet I would be able to handle the situation and save
someones life.
Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)

I would definitely recommend the mass casualty training seminar to everyone because it was
super interesting and very engaging. I learned a lot and felt like the four hours flew by! The
leadership seminar, although really interesting was not really geared towards new nurses or
student nurses and I felt as if I didnt come away with as much information as I could have
because I was not engaged all that much in this seminar. It was a great seminar but I dont think I
would recommend this experience as much.
