Discovery of California
In 1542, Europeans arrived on

the west coast of country,


which is now the state of
California
-At first this area belonged to
the country of Spain
-From 1822 to 1848, it was
part of the country Mexico,
Mexico and Spain brought
settlers there, who brought
their language and culture to
this area

California Becomes the USA


In 1848 however, the area

became part of the United States,


and became the state of California
-That year, gold was discovered
in California, and people from all of
the country and even from all over
the world came to California to look
for gold of their own, this was
called the California Gold Rush
-Gold was worth a lot of money,
and many people made a large
fortune off of it

Immigration to California
A lot people from all over came to settle on the

west coast
-Many people came from different countries;
these people were called immigrants
Immigrant: this is someone who leaves the country
that they live in, to move to another country
-Some of these immigrants were from China,
many of them came to make money to send back
to their families who still lived in China

Asian Immigrants
As the years went on, more immigrants came to

the west coast


-Many of these immigrants were from the eastern
Asian countries of Japan, Korea and the
Philippines

**Start a new life, send money back to family

Angel Island
From 1910 to 1940, the

first stop the Asian


American immigrants
coming into the country
through the west coast
was Angel Island in the
San Francisco Bay
-The immigrants had to
wait here on this island
until the United States
government decided if they
could come into and live in
this country

Latino Immigrants
Some people also came to the west coast of

California from Spanish speaking countries


like, Mexico and the countries of South
America
-Today, a quarter, or of people in California
are from a Latino background
