Personal Essay
The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when
you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
During my freshman year of high school, I earned the privilege of competing at the MHSAA Boy's Golf State
Championships, qualifying for both individual and team state finals. With a year of intense preparation, I was ready
to compete in the championship round. All of my hard work was finally going to pay off. The starting horn went off
and after a four hour round it was all over. As I sat down in the club house joined by all four of my teammates, I
quickly realized I posted the worst score on our team. My coach and teammates were counting on me to finish
with a low round and reach our goal of state champions. After the meet concluded, we were announced as third
place overall.Upon processing the outcome of my round, I was distraught. The goal that we were working toward
was no longer in reach. I knew that it was because of my own personal failure. No other teammate, coach, or
participant was involved with my result which made me culpable. Looking back at the year of intense training, I felt
as if it was a waste of my, my coaches', and my teammates' time. I was the one that blew it for my team. If I were
to place at all, we would have won the title entirely. Even with my teammates' consolations, I still felt like I let them
down.Over time, people forgot I had been the one to falter, but it took me a while to do so. Because they forgot, I
began to realize that I would be able to overcome my short comings. Being the one who failed, I knew I had to be
the one to succeed. The day the season ended was just the beginning for me. I took advantage of the off-season. I
convinced a local golf course owner to allow me to practice at his range any time I wished. During every single
swing lesson, workout, and practice round, the only thing that went through my mind was being held accountable
for last year's slip up. In order to achieve my goals, staying disciplined was my only option. As a whole year of
training went by, it was once again time to compete at the MHSAA Boy's Golf State Championships. I was
prepared to redeem myself. Before I got ready to play, I felt as if my emotions were starting to defeat me. My
entire body was trembling due to the fact that I was nervous for a repeat of the previous year. Gathering myself,
the head rules official called out, "Golfers, take your tee." I proceeded to the twelfth hole where I would begin my
round. A few moments later the starting horn sounded.I entered the clubhouse this time, not with the highest score
on the team but instead the lowest. Although as a team we came up short of our state championship goal, I was
satisfied with my low number; I was satisfied with my perseverance. The biggest obstacle that prevents people
from succeeding in something is the fear of failure. This was not something that I let take control of me. I, in turn,
took control of my fears. Without being determined and resilient, this would not have been possible.Something so
simple as having a high score in a round of golf can provide valuable lessons for my future. I'm aware college isn't
easy. There will be rough patches, sleepless nights, and bills to pay. Failing at something in college is inevitable.
Everyone will experience adversity; however, it's how one handles it that defines him.
Required Explanation
Education Interruption
During my Sophomore year I changed high schools and went from Hanover-Horton High School to Michigan
Center High School. This switch was a result of my parents not being satisfied with the programs Hanover-Horton
offered, such as honors/AP classes and a more diverse options for class subject. I then moved back to HanoverHorton High School after my parents and I realized that Michigan Center was not academically challenging as I
earned an easy 3.98 GPA.
