Setting:
When: 12:15-12:30
Where: At a small table in the back of the class.
Lesson Objective 1:
Given an oral prompt, students will rote count from 1 through 42 with 100%
accuracy on three separate occasions.
Things Youll Need:
- Learning Target I can count to 42!
- Mastery measure
- Behavior expectations poster
Lesson Opening (12:15 12:20)
Call students to attention: Good afternoon 1st graders!
Review behavior expectations: Refer to the behavior expectations poster by
reading each expectation. Have the students echo each expectations back to
you.

Activate students prior knowledge:


Tell students that recently they have counted accurately to 39.
Have them join you in counting from 1 through 39 chorally.
**Prompt the students to begin by saying: Ready, set, GO!
Communicate todays lesson target:
First graders, today we will work on counting. Lets read our learning target for
today. I will read it first and then you can echo it back to me. I can count to 42!
** Make sure all students echo back the learning target.
What number will we rote count to today? Students respond 42.
Review Vocabulary:
Tell the students that you just said rote count. Emphasize the word ROTE.

Direct students to turn to their partner seated next to them and answer the
question: What does rote count mean?
Provide students with the sentence starter: Rote counting means ____. Read
this to the students before you have them begin discussing.
Bring students back together by saying Eyes and ears on me in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
Ask students to share their idea of what rote counting means.
Tell students what it means. Rote counting is when you say the number names
in order from memory. ROTE (emphasis this word) counting sounds like 1, 2, 3,
4, 5.

these numbers and say them at a slower pace.
