STRUCTURAL INVESTIGATION REPORT

ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
CALMARLAND DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION
In response to Audit Observation Report regarding Grouted Riprap taken at Calmar Homes
Phase 8A Ext. last July 31, 2015, the present Design Engineer has reviewed and assessed the
approved construction plan to answer the structural stability of the constructed riprap.
It was found out that the standard structural design details specified in the construction plan
and the finished riprap doesnt conform to the minimum slope and toe requirements for the
bank stabilization. (See next pages) The following factors should be considered:
1. Granular Filter/Course aggregate = Minimum thickness of 6
A filter is a layer of material placed between the riprap and the underlying soil surface to
prevent soil movement into and through the riprap. Riprap should have a filter placed
under it in all cases. A filter can be of two general forms: A gravel layer or a plastic filter
cloth should conform to ASTM D-1777 and ASTM D-1682. (DPWH Blue book 505)
2. Minimum Slope (Should not be 2:3 as specified in plan but rather 1.5:1): The
existing ground should be graded to an appropriate slope, preferably no steeper than
1.5 horizontal feet to 1 vertical foot (1.5:1).

If the slope is too steep: (results in stone displacement), do not use riprap as
a retaining wall as seen in the construction site, as if may result to
overturning of riprap.
3. Minimum Dimension of Toe is detailed below. (Ref. Am. Standard Specs for Riprap
Slope Protection)
