Week 5

Concept or Skill: differentiating high sounds from low sounds, speaking voice from singing voice
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Materials needed:
- Goldilocks and the Three Bears book
- Goldilocks and the Three Bears sheet music
- Goldilocks YouTube video
- piano
- baritone xylophone
- alto xylophone
- soprano xylophone
- 3 pairs of mallets for each instrument
Objective(s):
1. Students will be able to differentiate between high and low sounds.
NYS National Arts Standard(s):
1. Creating, Performing, and Participating in the Arts.
National Standard(s) Music Education:
1. Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
2. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
a. perform on at least one instrument 1 accurately and independently, alone and in small
and large ensembles, with good posture, good playing position, and good breath, bow, or stick
control
Academic language used: high, low, glockenspiel, baritone, alto, soprano, singing voice,
speaking voice
Procedure:
1. Read Goldilocks and the Three Bears to the class in a normal speaking voice.
2. Ask the class: do you think baby bears voice would be high or low? Mama bears? Papa
bears?
3. Demonstrate a low voice for the class and have them copy; demonstrate a normal voice
(speaking level) for Mama bear, and a high voice for baby bear, having them copy.
4. Reread the story to them, having the class use motions to illustrate the size of each item
and their voices to demonstrate the difference in who is talking.
5. Watch the Goldilocks video
6. Choose 6 students to volunteer to be Papa bear, Mama bear, and baby bear (2 bears per
part) and seat them at the appropriate instrument. Reread the story to the class cueing the

students when it is their turn in the story to play. Switch off so that everyone gets a turn to
play (split into two classes if necessary).
7. Teach the class the Goldilocks song, adding in the instruments for the words huge, small,
and tiny only when the class is able to sing through the song successfully.
