Day 1 - Biblical Figures in the Wilderness — Why we sojourn. ~ David, Paul, Moses, Elijah, JESUS (look up background) ‘What is the purpose of the wilderness? What has your experience been in the wilderness? = Silent Walk: What are you carrying into this summer? What is God asking you to lay down? - Have them collect a rock. (first day of hike.) Key Verse: Eating: Matthew 6:11-13 (picking up all the pieces is Biblical) Leave No Trace Day 2 ~A Holy Surrender ~ Casting our Burdens on the Lord and Remembering (Holy Pilgrimage? Surrender? Trust? Casting Burdens on the Lord?) ~ _ First word: 1 Peter 5:6-11 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time, 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you! and make you strong, firi aiid steadfast. 11 To im be the power for ever and ever. Day 3 ~ Gaining Sustenance for the Journey First word: Deuteronomy 30:19 (NIV)19 This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that | have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live How is God asking you to choose life today? Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.” Coming out of solo time: Object lesson with Salt & sugar: put both on some food (apples?) and give it to them to eat. It's really easy for us to look good in ministry (& look like the “real deal” - the sugar— but what we are composed of is the wrong stuff) We need to let the sweetness of Jesus be at the core of our ministry, not just a good show, or people are going to get a really salty bite and be left with a bad taste in their ‘mouth, distrusting the next person that comes to offer them sustenance. Would the father give a snake? No, He loves his Son — He gives abundantly. Day 4— Coming up from the Wilderness {the promise of unfailing Love): First word: Song of Songs 8:50;6-7 Who is this coming up from the wilderness leaning on her beloved... 6 Place me like a seal over your heart, lke a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. 7 Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of one’s house for love, it would be utterly scorned. Strong Love ~Jon Thurlow “I know the end of the story I come up from the wilderness, leaning on my beloved...” We can persevere in the wilderness because we can trust that we serve a God who does not leave us in the wilderness, but is fully present and brings us out of our lack into abundance ENDING PRAYER: Ephesians 3:17b-19 17And | pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord's holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Key Verse: ~ Doxology? Commissioning out into the summer Debrief on the trip — things they did well, did not do well. Things they were surprised by.. Fears and excitements going into the final week before campers come, How you talk about this trip afterwards, especially with others will determine it. An experience is memorable, but the story is what preserves the memory. I don’t want you to downplay hard experiences, there are and were challenges for a reason, but | encourage you to think about how you will talk about this trip when people ask you how it went, and what story you tell. And think about the story you want your campers to tell when they get asked about their summer.
