Lieutenant Governors message on the

International Day of Persons with Disabilities
Toronto, December 3, 2015. Her Honour the Hon. Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario,
released the following message on the occasion of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities:
On International Day of Person with Disabilities 2015, I encourage all Ontarians to consider
what steps they can take to help build more inclusive communities so that persons with
disabilities can live up to their full potential. Together, we can challenge attitudes that create
barriers to employment and community participation for those who live with disabilities. At some
point in life, the vast majority of Canadians will be touched by disability in some way. Improving
accessibility for people of all abilities is not only the right thing to do, but an idea that makes
sense.
Ontario aims to be a leader in the movement to ensure greater accessibility. In addition to the
goals set out by the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, public institutions,
community groups, and businesses are doing their part to ensure accessibility throughout our
province for those with both visible and invisible disabilities. There will always be more progress
to be made, but today let us celebrate the contributions made by Ontarians with disabilities and
learn from each other in an atmosphere of respect and dignity.
