CASE MIDDLE SCHOOL

A Look Back at Punahou: December 1941

By Jace Nagamine 22
and Kikau Kahumoku 22
and Kai Pang 22

On December 7, 1941, Japan

bombed the U.S. Air Force Military
Base at Pearl Harbor. Many people
might not know Punahou School
greatly contributed to the war effort
during WW II. Between 1941 and
1945, Punahou School was
converted into a military support
outpost.
On the day of the bombing,
there was an announcement saying,
Attention everyone Pearl Harbor is
being bombed by the Japanese. This
is not a war game; this is not a
workout; this is real. The lieutenant
went to his duty as everyone was
either on Rocky Hill or in troubled
groups listening for further details.
There were calls for medics.
Otherwise there was silence. Smoke
blew in from the west.

On December 8, 1941, the

military arrived at the front gate of
Punahou School at 1:10 am, just
after celebrating the schools 100th
anniversary. Hundreds of military
men came in from the gates to set up
the school as an outpost.
The military painted the Princess
Pauahi Bishop Hall Dome black to
avoid making it a target of overhead
foreign military aerial vehicles. In
addition to the students everyday
school supplies, such as pencils and
erasers, all students were forced to
carry emergency gas masks for
protection from chemical weapons in
the war.
The high schoolers were sent to
work on plantation farms, while the
regular workers were fighting in the
military. Some of the other students
helped the military on campus. They
served food and helped injured
soldiers. They made tunnels for

emergency, which is now the castle

hall basement.
Punahou was converted into a
military outpost for 4 years; it
became something more than the
school it was before the war. After
the war, Punahou continued their
purpose of growing a new
generation of good citizens.

Peppermint Brittle
By Kelsie Inouye 22
and Tarin Tabuyo 22

Ingredients:
11 oz. white chocolate
About half a bag of peppermint
candy/candy canes (depends on
how strong you want the
peppermint taste; add more for
more peppermint taste, less if you
want less peppermint taste)
1 flat pan
1 roll of foil
Preparation: 5 min
Cook: 5 min
Ready in: 1 hr
1. Line a large flat pan with heavy
duty foil.
2. Place water into a pot. Boil water
then put onto medium low heat. Then
put on a bowl with the white
chocolate that is bigger than your
pots open width inside. This creates
a double boiler. Stir constantly until
all of the chocolate is melted and
smooth.
3. Place your candy in a plastic bag
or between two pieces of wax
paper. Using a mallet or rolling pin,
break the candy into chunks. Stir
peppermint into melted white
chocolate.
4. Spread evenly in pan, and chill
until set, about 1 hour.
5. Break pieces by slamming pan on
counter.

Mason Jar Christmas

By Sammie Kim 20

Christmas is the time to spread joy

and give to others. Crafts are great
decorations for your home to get
you into the Christmas spirit. Crafts
and decorations are expensive to
buy at stores. Why not make your
own? CMS Courier has a simple
Christmas craft for you to make.
Materials:
1 mason jar
White acrylic paint
A medium sized paint brush
Glue
4 cotton balls
Glitter (optional)
Colored yarn
1 sharpie
A tea candle
Directions:
1. Gather your
materials.
2. Wash out your mason jar to
make sure it is clean.
3. Start by painting of the
bottom of the mason jar (paint
two or three coats).
4. While the paint dries, get the
four cotton balls and make a
snowman with two cotton balls
as the bottom and stack the
other two on top of each other.
Then glue them together.
5. Decorate your snowman by
using any colored yarn to make
a beanie or a scarf and make
sure to provide a friendly face
for it.
6. Get the white paint or glitter to
make snow, dot around the jar
so it looks like it is snowing.
7. Place the snowman in the jar.

8. Write a nice word on the top of

the jar in sharpie (optional).

larger packages (see step 7).

They can be tiled together or
overlapped.

4. Place the photo: pay attention to

how you want your image
placed on the box. Put it up top
where everyone can see it!
5. Tape into place: go ahead and
wrap as you would a normal
package, taping the bottom and
folding the sides.
6. Finishing touches: add a ribbon
to seal your present.

A Fun Way To Make

Wrapping Paper
By Kylee Smith 20

Whether stacked under the tree or

presented to a friend, these
creatively wrapped presents set the
tone for a memorable holiday gift
exchange. Heres a way to make
cheap, fun, and easy wrapping
paper.
Materials:
Photos to print
Printer
Scissors
Tape
Ribbons/Bow
Presents to wrap
Directions:
1. Print your photos: use your home
printer and regular copy paper.
Thinner paper works best and is
easy to fold around your
package. Photo quality paper
will be too thick for nice, smooth
wrapping.
2. Trim the edges of your photo: no
borders here. Clean edges give
your gifts a professional feel.
3. Measure your package: make
sure you have enough paper to
cover the entire box. TIP print
multiples of the same image for

7. Bigger Packages? No problem!

Tile your image (you can do this
in a photo editor by repeating
an image in a tile pattern) and
print multiple sheets to fit your
desired size. Trim the edges and
tape the sheets together on the
backside before you start to
wrap.

Flare is an epidemic disease that

turns everyone into cranks. If you
get scared easily, DO NOT watch
this, because those cranks seem
really scary, and when they come
out, they stay out for a really long
time. I never saw them because I
was closing my eyes and ears while
they were on the screen and missed
half of the movie. But if you do like
those kinds of things I recommend
this movie for you.
Overall, I think this movie was
good because it had all the suspense
that I could take, and at the end of
the movie, it makes you want to
know what happens next.

The Maze Runner book came

out in 2009 and readers loved it, but
when the movie came out, it
received mixed reviews. I looked at
fan reviews on Fandango, the
reviews were all different. Some
people say that it was great and is
just like the book, and has great
suspense that keeps you at the edge
of your seat, and they could see it
over again and theyd love it the
same. Others thought the movie was
terrible and was nothing like the
book, like two different stories with
the same characters.
I personally have not read the
books, and cannot compare the two,
so I am basing it only on the movie.
If you like pre-apocalyptic movies
then this is the movie for you, it is all
about people trying to survive and
find a cure to The Flare. The

History of Ketchup
By Kevin Huang '20

This red concoction, both

savory and sweet, is found
everywhere; 97% of homes in the
US report having that signature, red
bottle of ketchup. But where did this
dynamic substance come from? Well,
this signature American condiment
has its roots in a place that couldn't
be less American.
The story starts off as far back
as 300 BCE, in China, where records
document the use of fermented
pastes. It is believed that at around
the 17th century, British explorers in
China probably encountered Ktsiap, the name of a Chinese sauce
made from fermented fish. The
explorers grew a taste for this sauce,
and returned home whereupon they
tried to replicate the sauce.
Obviously, they failed, or else
we wouldn't have the ketchup that
we have today. However, the
ketchup the British made wasn't yet
the red substance we know today.
Early examples of ketchup recipes in
Britain include things like oysters,
mussels, mushrooms, walnuts,
lemons, celery, and even fruits like
plums and peaches. Usually, these
ingredients were boiled down or left
to sit with salt. Finally, in 1812,
James Mease, a Philadelphia
scientist, created the first recipe for
modern ketchup. He wrote: "the
choicest ketchup comes from love
apples (tomatoes).
Ketchup's huge success
was due in part because it
could be stored for a year.

Despite this long shelf life, makers of

ketchup had trouble preserving
ketchup. Because tomato season
was short, they had to figure out a
way to keep tomato pulp fresh year
round. These makers resorted to
preservatives, which were found by
investigations to be at an unsafe
amount. One person at the front of
the war on these preservatives was
Dr. Harvey Washington Wiley, who
believed that as long as high quality
ingredients were handled properly,
preservatives were unnecessary. He
eventually teamed up with a man by
the name of Henry J. Heinz, a
ketchup maker that was certain that
Americans did not want chemicals in
their ketchup. Heinz then developed
a recipe that used ripe, red
tomatoes because they contained
higher amounts of a natural
preservative, Pectin, than did the
scraps other ketchup maker's used.
Heinz also increased the amount of
vinegar, and soon began production
of preservative free ketchup. By
1905, Heinz had sold 5 million
bottles of ketchup, and his company
has been dominating the ketchup
industry ever since.
This is a brief history on a product
that plays an important role in the
condiment industry. From its Asian
roots to its European beginnings,
ketchup has become the American
staple.

Quick Organization Tips:

1. Ask for help
In school, getting behind can make
your year so much harder. Asking
teachers or parents when you have
questions will reduce stress, and
make you understand what you
didnt before. Dont be shy!
2. De-clutter
Have a home for all of your
belongings; dont just put all of
your things in one big pile where it
will stay forever.
3. Create email folders
Your emails can pile up very
quickly, and going through all of
them to find one can be difficult.
Creating folders can help you to
quickly find an email.
4. Set Cellphone Alarms
Set an alarm for when you want to
wake up or have to go somewhere.
When you want to take a break,
set an alarm so you dont lose
track of time. This can keep you on
schedule and ensure that
everything gets done.

Organizing Your Life

By Caroline Oyster 20 and Sierra
Smart 20

Organization is extremely
important, especially for the
average CMS middle schooler who
balances school, extracurriculars,
social life, and everything in
between. When youre
disorganized, your space is untidy
and disorderly, you can lose things,
and even lose focus. Here are a few
tips on how to keep your life
organized.
Use a planner, and write
everything down; homework you
have to finish, class notes, things
you need to buy, etc. This way, you
wont forget what you need to buy,
study, or plan.
Set goals. Have a clear idea of what you are planning to accomplish each
day. List what needs to get done from least to most important. Not only will this
help you to get things done, but knowing you are on top of things will lessen
stress.
Give everything you have a specific home. Organize all of your belongings,
and make sure everything has a specific place to be when not in use. Make
sure your storage spaces are easy to access, and labeling will help to make
your storage spaces even more efficient.
In the case of school, you can have simple things to make your year lowstress, and simpler. Have a backup set of school supplies with pencils, blank
notebooks, and everything that you can run out of. I know how easily pencils
can disappear. Get your backpack and athletic bag ready the night before, so
you arent rushing to find all of your things in the morning, when youre still half
asleep. It is very easy to forget your things in the morning, and this can really
help in these cases.
Maya Piper 20 says, Teachers can get frustrated when your binders and
work are messy and all over the place, so thats one of my motivations to stay
organized.
The more you procrastinate on something, the harder it will be to complete
it. If you know you have to do something by a certain date, complete it as soon
as possible by setting a deadline for yourself in advance, so that you wont be
scrambling to finish it at the last minute. In order to start your work sooner and
complete it more efficiently, have a specific spot in your home to do homework
where you wont get distracted by phones and television.
Being disorganized can clutter up your life, and its important to keep track
of all your things, especially when it comes to school. These tips can help you
stay on top of things, and make your life a little less complicated.

Hanukkah

By Jen Ackerman 20
CMS Courier asked teachers
and students about their most
memorable December celebrations.
Chaplain Lauren Medeiros of the
the Junior School said, Every year,
the entire second grade presents a
Christmas chapel that rivals anything
Disney presents (in my humble
opinion!), to hear 150 of our
beautiful children raising their voices
in song - and seeing them in colorful
costumes - and watching them tell
stories of angels and shepherds,
holiday traditions from around the
world, or even how Christmas came
to Hawaii so many years ago - is a
truly magical part of the holiday
season each year. Some people say
that it doesn't feel like Christmas until
they've heard the 2nd graders sing!
Dr. Jim Scott, school President,
commented, Besides enjoying extra
sleep, a good book, football on TV,
and basketball on campus, our
favorite Holiday memory over the
years has been our involvement with
the faculty/staff Christmas Eve
Service in the Chapel. The Christmas
Eve Service is attended and led by
many faculty, staff, and their
families. As the years have gone by,

believe that we should relax over

these holidays, instead of being
stressed out by the common
problems of everyday life, and
connect with each other.
Hannah Humphreys 20
responded with, "My favorite
celebration to participate in is the
Nutcracker. I have danced in the
Nutcracker for five years, and
counting!"
Recalling a surprise for a second
grade class, Rinny Fan 23, Katie
Awaya 23, and Mari Kunasaki 23
wrote this piece, Twinkling lights,

reindeer footprints were found in
C2. Who could it be? It was such a
sight. Our class was surprised when
they came into the classroom after
lunch recess. There was hot
chocolate and cookies outside on
the lanai. Then we sang Christmas
carols in the classroom. People also
got to play on the piano. We sang:
We Wish you a Merry Christmas,
Deck the Halls, Rudolph the Red
Nosed Reindeer, Jingle Bells, Frosty
the Snowman, Little Drummer Boy,
and Silent Night. There was also a
nice and naughty list . Everybody

December is a time for the

holidays. People celebrate
Christmas, Kwanzaa, and
Hanukkah. My family is Jewish, and
we have always celebrated the
Jewish holidays, especially
Hanukkah. I have never gave much
thought to what Hanukkah was or
how it came to be. Many of my
friends do not celebrate Hanukkah,
so Id like to share about what
Hanukkah is about.
When I was younger, I would
always just think of Hanukkah as a
time for when I get eight presents,
but that was not true. Hanukkah was
really about celebrating the light.
The Jews lived in the Holy Land
and the Greeks soon robbed the
Jews of their land. Before the Greeks
lost the war to the Jews, they made
oil in the Beit HaMikdash impure.
The Maccabees, who led the Jews
into war found a jar of oil that had
been overlooked. The Jews lit the jar
for their love of God. The oil then
miraculously burned for eight days,
when it was only expected to burn
for one.
Continued on page 8

Hanukkah continued
Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of
rededication, can also be referred to
as The Festival of Lights. The
festival is an eight day celebration
starting on the 35th day of the
Jewish month, Kislev.
The most common foods ate
during Hanukkah are latkes (lahtkuh), and brisket, which is a
traditional main course.
During Hanukkah, people wear
their nicest clothes. Orthodox Jewish
men always cover their heads by
wearing a skullcap known in Hebrew
as a kippah, or in Yiddish as a
yarmulke. Most Jews will wear it
when praying, attending the
synagogue, or at a religious event or
festival. Wearing a yarmulke is seen
as a sign of devotion to the religion.
Women also cover their heads by
wearing a scarf or a hat.
This year, Hanukkah starts on
Dec 6 and ends on Dec 14. Each
day our family lights a new candle.

Real or Fake?

By Isabella Dy-Liacco 22

Many people wonder if they

should just get a fake Christmas tree,
or a real one. Fake trees are able to
be used every year, and are perfect
if you have a pet that might eat the
real tree. Real trees give a pine
scent that is hard to replicate.
Here are the pros and cons of
real and fake Christmas trees.

Many pros of having a
real tree is that they have a
very fresh scent that fills
your home. It also supports
many local farmers and can
be used as compost after
they die. They also bring a
wonderful Christmas spirit
into your home and are
brightly green.

The pros of a fake tree
are simple. They only need to
be bought once, and are much
cheaper. They also lower the amount
of trees that are cut down. They are
also perfect if you have a pet that is
allergic, or loves to eat the pines of
a real tree.

But all good things come with
a price. There are also many cons of
having a fake or real tree. Real trees
might bring you the issue of pests, or
other parasites. If you have a pet,
they may eat parts of the tree and
get sick. They are also probably
grown using pesticides that may be
toxic to wildlife, and perhaps,
people. Real trees are more costly
over time. You would end up
spending more money by buying a
new fresh tree every year, than if
you bought a quality expensive fake
tree.
Fake trees also have cons. They
are often made with a toxic
chemical called PVC. PVC contains a
hormone-disrupting plastic. Some
fake trees are also contaminated
with lead. They even have warning
labels about brain-damaging lead.
Fake trees cannot be recycled, and if
you decide you want a new tree,
they will end up in landfill forever.

I have a fake tree... I have
used it for 5 Christmases and it
really saves money. But, and the but
is important, I only do it because I
am in Hawaii. The trees die and lose
their fragrance so quickly. This is
why I buy wreaths that are real and
put them around the tree. I also burn
pine candles, commented Mrs.
Robles, sixth grade teacher.

My family and I usually buy a

real tree, because of its great scent
and Christmas spirit, added Koren
Kano, 22.
Well, in the past, my family has
always gotten a real Christmas tree
because it just seems to carry more
holiday spirit than a fake tree. It
smells good too, but if you have a
pet at home that likes to climb or eat
the tree, then I suggest a fake tree of
course. I have a cat at home and she
would frequently would hide behind
it or climb it, fake or not, replied
Mattie Morales, 22.

The Most Special Christmas

By Lucy Bell 22

Every Christmas, I decorate the

Christmas tree and bake cookies like
everyone else. Christmas is always
fun but I want to make it a little
better this year. This Christmas, I am
planning to have the best one yet!
Since we dont have snow, you
can make snowballs with shaving
cream and cornstarch. Dump two 16oz boxes of cornstarch into a plastic
container. Add an entire container of
white foam shaving cream. Mix the
cornstarch as you add the shaving
cream. You can also use the shaving
cream lid as a mold. Then you can
go outside and have a fun snowball
fight. You can have an awesome
time with snowball fights even in
Hawaii!
An alternative, if you dont want
to make a snowball, is to make fake
snow! Buy diapers for around $3
with sodium polyacrylate at the
bottom, where there is a little pocket
sewn in. Put the polyacrylate into a
bowl then pour water into it. Now
you can decorate your front lawn or
make mini snowmen.

Top 3 Places to Go to in
Hiroshima
By Maya Anderson 22
Hiroshima is a peaceful place
with rolling hills and a lot of history.
Hiroshima is 422 miles or 680
kilometers from Tokyo. The flight to
Hiroshima is about nine hours and

six minutes. Here are three places

you definitely should go to.
The most peaceful place in
Hiroshima is the Peace Memorial
Museum. There are artifacts from the
atomic bomb that exploded over
Hiroshima, ending WWll. There are
also some gruesome pictures that
show that nuclear weapons are
terrible. There is a Flame of Peace
that only will be extinguished when
all nuclear weapons on earth are
destroyed.
Another valuable experience is
riding on the Shinkansen or the
bullet train. You can travel all over
Japan. Price varies on location.
Getting to Tokyo costs about 34
American dollars. You can see so
many things from the train like Mt.
Fuji, and its very comfortable with
reclining chairs! Food and drinks are
allowed on the train too.
Just of of Hiroshima is
Miyajima or the Island of
the Gods. Its famous for a
floating gate in red. You
take a boat to get there.
There are so many places
to shop and explore. But
the island has an
abundance of deer. You
can pet and feed them. Be
careful because deer like
to steal paper out of your
bags.
These are the most
peaceful places in Japan. Make sure
to visit Hiroshima soon!

Roys is a great restaurant to go to,
but on the expensive side. They have
three locations; Hawaii Kai,
Koolina, and Waikiki. This
restaurant has 4 stars. If you go,
make sure to make a reservation. If
you go during Christmas or New
Years, your reservation should be at
least 6 weeks before the date. If
you have a little brother or sister
under the age of 10, they can
order from the kids menu and get
apples, carrot sticks, celery with
ranch and two mini quesadillas.
Menu: A this restaurant the food is
worth the price. Roys has their
own original Roys Blackened
Island Ahi which includes spicy
mustard. Depends on your taste.
Another great choice is the
Butterfish, but thats more of an
adult dish. For people who like
salad, Okimotos Hawaii Kai
Collection is a great choice.

Top of Waikiki is an cool restaurant

to go to. You're probably
wondering why Im telling you a
good restaurant and not an
awesome one. The reason is, this
restaurant more than 20 stories high
spins 360 degrees under an hour!
Mrs. Kobayashi, a 6th grade
teacher quotes The environment is
nice but not too stuffy. I especially
liked the Top of Waikiki because it
moves around so the views are
constantly changing. This restaurant
is located 2270 Kalakaua Ave,
Honolulu, HI 96815. The food is a
little on the pricey side, but if you
love the views, this is a restaurant for
you!

Menu: We put together a menu for

one person. Then, a simple but
Delicious Caesar Salad. After, for
you entree, Mamas New York Steak

Molten Chocolate Butter Cake.
There is also a tasting menu and
more. For kids 12 years and
younger, there are 4 choices. Grilled
Breaded Shrimp, Grilled Cheese
Sandwich, Spaghetti and Meatballs,
and Garlic Chicken.

History of The Nutcracker

Hannah Humphreys 20
The Nutcracker is over 100 years old. The first show ever was on
December 17, 1892, on the stage at Mayinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg,
Russia. Although this is one of the most beloved Christmas shows, the first
show was a total failure. The audience didnt like it and neither did the critics.
As the ballet started to perform in the United States, it gained back its
popularity. The first show in the United States was put on the San Francisco
Opera Ballet in 1944. As the show spread throughout the states and into
New York, it soon became a holiday tradition.

The Nutcracker is a ballet performance put on by Hawaii Ballet Theatre.

This particular performance is special because most shows are put on with all
professionals, but this one is put on with all different ages, from 1st grade to
adults. Some of the most well known dances/scenes are The Waltz, The War
Between the Soldiers and Mice, The Bon Bons, The Snowflakes and more.
Some signature characters include Clara, (Uncle) Drosselmeyer, The
nutcracker, Mother Ginger, and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Not only can you go to
the show, but, you can meet the cast after at the Sugar Plum Tea.
This was my first year in

The original propose of nutcrackers were

given to you for good luck and to protect your
family.
