E-portfolio Assignment 3: Lesson plan
Context: This lesson is for a class of 7th and 8th graders in a small Christian K-8
school in Paraguay. Paraguay is a bilingual country that requires both Spanish and
Guaran in school, with an additional 3 years of English in high school. This
particular grade school provides English as a Foreign Language from kindergarten
through 8th grade, with the goal of graduating students that not only meet the
national requirement but that can achieve higher academic English and even
successfully travel to the United States as young exchange students. This particular
class focuses on conversation as many students are considering or preparing for the
exchange student opportunity provided by a particular Illinois grade school. Some
have had as many as 8 years of English and others who started at the school later
may have only had one year of English at school.
Objectives:
1) Students will identify and produce various expressions of gratitude.
2) Students will demonstrate ability to express gratitude in appropriate
scenarios.
Lesson Plan Structure
A. Introduction: Why do these people say what they do in these situations?
How would you respond in a similar situation? By the end of this lesson,
you will be able to answer those questions.
Show three short video clips of people expressing gratitude
What happened to these people?
Write key words on board
B. Review/Preview:
Review emotion words
Review qualities vocabulary
Today we will develop another important quality to display in
conversation: gratitude.
C. Present:
Selected readings, including Bible verses, poems, and short
excerpts about gratitude
New vocabulary and phrases
Class brainstorming and definitions
D. Practice:
Teacher-directed

o Dialogue and drill


Student-directed
o Pair practice with provided dialogues

E. Produce:
Students write their own dialogues in pairs or groups of three
Role-play of their dialogues
F. Follow-up/Closure:
Watch video clips again and this time students write down or take
note of the expressions of gratitude and discuss afterwards
Students may do a short journal entry on the topic of gratitude
For homework, students will write their own dialogue expressing
gratitude to a family member
