Athlete stories for groups from http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/Olympics/stories.html
Instructional delivery (What information is essential for the student to know before beginning and how will this
skill be communicated to students? This is the section where you explicitly delineate how you will present the
lesson. Direct instruction? Small group? Centers? The instruction could include a variety of instructional
delivery methods.)
This lesson plan will introduce the cultural context of ancient Olympic games and the ancient athletes
perspective on Ancient Olympics. The lesson will also require students to work in groups and present their
given Ancient Athlete as partners as if they were in a live television interview. Finally, students will use
their own devices to vote which athlete should win first place.
Anticipatory Set (ENGAGE): (Before you dig into the meat of your lessons instruction, set the stage for your
students by tapping into their prior knowledge and giving the objectives a context. What activities will you
use to focus students on the lesson for the day?)
Students will be shown four pictures that all relate with the Ancient Olympics. Using their background
knowledge, students will interpret how the pictures all connect to the Ancient Olympics.
(EXPLORE): students encounter hands-on experiences in which they explore the concept further. They
receive little explanation and few terms at this point, because they are to define the problem or
phenomenon in their own words.

they have mastered the skill without teacher guidance.)
Within their groups, students will read their chosen ancient athletes biography and will write a brief script
choosing three or four things they want to share with the class about their ancient athlete. Once they
finish writing their script, the groups will choose one person to be the athlete and one person to be the
journalist.

Check for Understanding (EVALUATE): (Identify strategies to be used to determine if students have
learned the objective FORMATIVE.)
Each group will perform a live television interview. One person will perform as an athlete being

performing, students will keep in mind which athlete they think should win first place.
Closure: (What method of review and evaluation will be used to complete the lesson? How will you wrap
up the lesson by giving the lesson concepts further meaning for your students?)
Once all the groups performed, students will bring out their own devices and vote which athlete should win
first place on PollEv.com/alexisswope285
Students will see on the screen a word cloud of the athletes name, whichever athletes name is larger than
the others is the winner.
