2014 CYS FAVORITE ALUM: FRED AND KAY LANDE

CYS FAVORITE ALUM HONOREES

For more than 40 years, Fred and Kay Lande have hinged their lives on Iowa State Athletics. As
long-time Ames residents, the two have held season tickets for mens basketball and wrestling since
1968, football since 1973 and womens basketball since 1994. Not only have they attended home
games, but the couple has traveled to many away games including Big 8 and Big 12 Tournament
games, bowl games and NCAA wrestling meets.
This year, the Iowa State Athletics Department recognizes the Landes as the recipients of the 2014
Cys Favorite Alum award. Since 1955, the Iowa State University Athletics Department has recognized
the loyalty and accomplishments of a graduate or friend of Cyclone Athletics.
Kay and Fred have lived their lives in a manner that is so consistent with what Cys Favorite Alum
represents, Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said. It was a very special moment for me,
one of my all-time favorite phone calls, when I was given the privilege to call Kay to let her know
that Fred and she were chosen as this years recipients.
Freds passion for Iowa State Athletics began as a child when his friends father was the groundskeeper
at Clyde Williams Field. Fred, who was born and raised in Huxley, would attend games occasionally
and walk the sidelines, following the team and coaches around, taking everything in until they were
sent off to find their seats.
In 1953, Fred moved to Ames where he accepted a position with the Iowa Department of Transportation.
It was through the IDOT that Fred met Tip Anderson, the official scoreboard operator at mens
basketball games. In 1967, Anderson had an opening and asked Fred if he would like to fill in and
help at the games. Though Fred agreed reluctantly to help for the remainder of that year, he came
back and served as a scoreboard operator for the next 34 years until his retirement.
Kay, a native of Chariton, Iowa, moved to Ames in 1963 where she instantly became an avid fan of
Cyclone athletics. She and Fred were married in 1987. Kay still works full-time at the Iowa State
Center as the administrative receptionist.

Fred and Kay have truly bled Cardinal and Gold for over four decades, providing endless contributions
and enthusiasm to the university.
