Reddy, Raj. "Robotics and Intelligent Systems in Support of Society." Ieee.org.

Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Jan. 2006. Web. 07 Nov. 2015.

Raj Reddy is a professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh,

Pennsylvania. He teaches computer science and is considered an early pioneer in
the field of artificial intelligence. The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon was
founded by him and he helped to create the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge
Technologies in India. He also received the ACM Turing award, which is considered
the highest award to be given in the field of computer science. In his article
Robotics and Intelligent Systems in Support of Society, Reddy is likely trying to
reach out to people skeptical on the idea of artificial intelligence as opposed to
experts in the field. He does this by including possible uses of AI that would help
everyone around the world and including laymans terms to explain to concepts
instead of complicated word choice.
Reddy starts off the article by stating the positives associated with
implementing robotics into various different fields. First he talks about how robotics
around the elderly could combat rising prices of nursing homes and help the
growing elderly population of the world. Next Reddy goes into how robots could be
useful in rescue situations, doing dangerous work that saves rescuers lives and
gets to those in need faster. The implications of a robotic tutor is also talked about.
These tutors would help those that want to learn in the far reaches of the world.
Finally Reddy states that both rural and urban countries can benefit from the

development of AI. He talks about one example with health care being able to
possible save many lives due to advanced AI.
Quotes:
Robots are also paving the way for many rescue missions, traveling through
smoldering ruins to places rescuers cant reach. (24)
The causes of many newborn deathsinfection, birth asphyxia or trauma,
prematurity, and hypothermiaare preventable (30)
Analysis:
This piece is more background information as to the context of the current
situation of robotics and artificial intelligence. The article gives supporting
information for why these technologies are coming about in the first place. The
ideas brought up in this article are likely going to be used as a more background,
supportive piece instead of a major work in the inquiry.
