Competency Ten

Competency 10
Intern engages, assesses, intervenes and evaluates with
individuals, families, groups, organizations, and
communities.

10.1
Skilled at preparing for action with individuals, families,
groups, organizations, and communities
Example: As an intern, I worked with individuals and families
who were escaping from their abuser. SFVC has WAVE
classes for women and men who batter can attend
CHOICES. SFVC interacts with other organizations and
collaborates. The candle light vigil is a way in which the
agency connects the issue of DV with the community.

10.2
Is skilled at using empathy and other interpersonal skills
Example: While listening to a client speak about their
situation, you must remain unbiased and try to have a level
of understanding.

10.3
Skilled at developing a mutually agreed-on focus of work
Example: The learning contract helped with this competency
and completion of those tasks helped with my social work
abilities.

10.4
Collecting, organizing, and interpreting client data
Example: As an intern, I did intakes on clients and put their
information into the database.

10.5
Assessing client strengths and limitations
Example: The intake used by the agency assesses clients
background which can be an indicator of strengths and
limitations of the client and how to serve the client.

10.6
Developing mutually agreed-on intervention goals and
objectives
Example: If a client comes in for a protective order, the goal
is to have them in court by 2 pm and DV court on Friday.

Selecting appropriate intervention strategies
Example: At SFVC, each client is unique and each situation
is as well. The staff of the agency have to create different
ways in which they can serve that particular client.

10.8
Initiating actions to achieve organizational goals
Example: At SFVC, everyone has a role in the agency. While
I was an intern, the staff had meetings to discuss goals and
objectives of the agency

Implementing prevention interventions that enhance client
capacities
Example: SFVC applies for grants to serve the clients.
Recently, the agency was rewarded a grant for transitional
housing for victims of DV.

10.10
Helping clients resolve problems
Example: SFVC assists all clients with their problems
whether its shelter, WAVE classes, food, clothing, etc. the
agency will help in anyway they can.

10.11
Negotiating, mediating, and advocating for clients
Example: The court advocate works with victims of DV and
attends court with the client to provide support and helps
them with minimal legal services.

10.12
Facilitating transitions and endings
Example: The shelter only provides a thirty day stay. After
that, clients are responsible for finding somewhere to stay;
however, the agency works closely with Lumberton Housing
Authority to provide these women with shelter.

10.13
Analyzing, monitoring, and evaluating interventions critically
Example: Before a client enters the shelter, the shelter
coordinator has to determine if the client is in a true DV
situation to receive services from SFVC.
