Candidates in early childhood degree programs have a strong foundation in child development which allows them to understand each child's unique characteristics and needs from birth to age 8. They recognize the multiple influences that impact development and learning. Using their developmental knowledge, candidates are able to create learning environments that are healthy, respectful, supportive, and appropriately challenging for young children.

Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs are grounded in a child development knowledge base. They use their understanding of young childrens characteristics and needs, and of multiple interacting influences on childrens development and learning, to create environments that are healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging for each child. Key elements of Standard 1 1a: Knowing and understanding young childrens characteristics and needs, from birth through age 8. 1b: Knowing and understanding the multiple influences on early development and learning 1c: Using developmental knowledge to create healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environments for young children. To illustrate this standard I attached two files, one is of CHD 109 Language & Literacy Development in Early Childhood, in which I made an annotated bibliography of twenty childrens book to read, all of them are different and help the development of each one. The second is a creative Recipe for children, considering the nutrition values and a suggestive presentation. This assignment was presented during CHD 107 Health, Safety, and Nutrition, Class. The menu include: Fruits Vegetables Meat, Eggs, Nuts, Beans Bread, Cereal, Rice, Pasta Milk, Yogurt, Cheese.
