Someonewhohashadahugeeffectonmyliteracynarrativeismystepfather.Thefirst
timeinmylifewhereIwasveryintenselydevotedtoreadingwasduringmiddleschool.Igot
veryintoreadingtheEragonbookseries.Itwasveryencouragingtomeduringthattimeto
readthesamethingsthathewas.SoonafterIwasdonewiththatbookseriesIcontinuedto
moveontootherones,andhecontinuedtoencouragemetoreadmore.

IneverreallyhadaparticularplacewhereIreadmybooksorwroteanything.Iguessmy
mostconsistentspotwhereIreadbookswithinthepasttenyearswouldbemyroomwhenI
movedtoMatthews,NC.Shortlyaftermymomremarriedwemovedinwithmystepfather,I
begantogetmoreinvolvedwithreading.ThatiswhenIstartedtoreadtheHarryPotterand
Eragonbookseries,whichwereveryhighlevelreadingsformyage.Iwouldusuallyreadfor
hoursatatimeandwouldtakethebookseverywhere,andespeciallywhenweatedinnerby
ourselves.HoweverwhenIusedtoliveinCabarruscounty,NorthCarolinameandmysiblings
wouldcompleteourhomeworkatthedinnertableandwherewewouldstayuntilweweredone.

Myexperiencewiththebookfairshasalwaysbeenapleasantone.Itwasalwaysfunto
beabletogetoutofclasstogotothem.Icanrememberallofthefuntoysandschoolsupplies,
aswellaslookingattheinterestingbookstoreadthroughwhilewehadthetime.InhindsightI
kindofwonderwhytheteachersandschoolhadusgotothemImprettysurethattheteachers
knewasmuchaswedidthattheonlyrealreasonwhyanyoftheotherkidswouldwanttogois
totalk,andjustlikemegetoutofclass.Therewerehoweverthosefewkidsthatactuallywent
tothebookfairsandboughtbooks.OneofthefewthingsthatIdidbuyfromthebookfairwas
oneofthebooksfromtheEragonbookseries,andisoneofbiggestreasonswhyIstarted
readingsomuchthroughmiddleschool.AnotheroneoftheseriesofbooksthatIendedup
pickingupfromthebookfairwasArtemisFowl.

Myfavouritechildhoodauthor/bookhadtobeHarryPotter,byJ.K.Rowling.Thereason
whytheHarryPotterbookserieswassospecialtomeisbecauseitwasthebiggestfictionbook
seriesIhadeverread.Ialwayslovedbooksthatwerefilledwithcontentandarichstoryline,
andHarryPotterdefinitelyhadthosecharacteristics.IalwaysgotmadthatwhenIendedabook
therewasnomorestoriestoreadofworldthatIhadmentallysteppedinto.Readingthebooks
alwaysseemedtoblowupmyimaginationwiththefantasticalthingsthatIwouldimagineinmy
head.Withthingslikethehippogriff,dragons,andwizardduelingthescenesthatwere
happeninginmyhead.

ThefirsttimeIeverusedacomputerwasathomeIbelieve.IthinkthefirstthingIever
didonitwasplaylearninggames,andaDisneyracinggame.Thefirsttimethatmyimmediate
familyhadevergottenacomputerwaswhenIwas6or7.Ithinkmyfirstexperiencewith
powerpointwaswhenIgottomiddleschool.UpuntilmiddleschoolIlivedinCabarrusCounty,
sotechnologywasstillbeingslowlyintegratedintothesystem.Ithinkthecomputerthatwehad
whenIwaslittleactuallyaidedmyliteracynarrativebecauseIplayedalotoflearninggames.
Thelearninggamesmadethelearningfunandexciting,soIwasconstantlyonitaswellas
othergamingconsoleslikemygameboyandPlayStation2.

IthinkthebestconnectionthatIhadwithoneofthecharactersiswithlily.Ihadrough
parentalstructuregrowingup.IhavehadthreedadsandthecurrentoneiskindoflikeT.Rayin
hispersonality.LikelilyIalsodonotknowoneofmybiologicalparents.Lilyinthebookdoes
notknowherMother,andImyselfdonotknowmybiologicalfather.SoIhavehadsimilar
feelingstoherinthatIwanttoknowmylostparent,andIalsowanttothinkthathehas
changedsincewhathappenedwhenIwasborn.Manypeoplewhohavebothparentscannot
understandthatfeelingofwantingtounderstandwheretheycamefrom,andtheirlostfamily.I
canalsounderstandthekindoflossininterestinbookswhenLilyleftherhometown.
Somethingsimilartothathappenedtomeacoupleofyearsago,duringsomefamilyturmoil
overthepastyearsthatfocuswasturnedawayfrombooks.

Myfamilytreeisverylengthy.MyGrandfatherandGrandmotherwerebothbornin
PuertoRicoaswellasmyMom,herbrother,andsister.HowevertheymovedtoCaliforniawhen
myMomandhersiblingswerelittle.EventuallythewentfromtexasandthenontoFlorida.After
yearsspenttheremyMomhadmeandmybigbrother.Thenmymomgotdivorcedfrommy
biologicalfather,andlatermarriedmyfirststepfather.Duringthatmarriagemystepdad
broughtintothefamilytwodaughters.Latermymomgotdivorcedfromhimandthedaughters
left,andsheisnowmarriedtomysecondstepdad.

IlearnedsomereallycoolinformationaboutmygreatgreatgreatuncleRoberto
Cofresi.HeissomeonethatIwanttolearnaboutandtraceallthewaybackthroughallthe
generationsofmyfamily.Howeverhewasaliveduringthe1800ssothattimeframeiswhatis
goingtostopmefrombeingabletoreachallthewaybackthroughthegenerationstogetto
him.IamalsoveryexcitedtoseeaboutwhatofmyfamilyoriginatedfromPuertoRicoand
whichofthemcamefromEurope.Ibelievemostlythroughmygrandmotherssideofthefamily
camefromEuropeandwehavemanydifferenttiestoalotoftheEuropeancountries.

Mygrandmotherisalwaysmakingpuertoricanorhispanicfoods.Itisoneofthebest
thingsIloveaboutgoingtomygrandparentsthatIcantwaitfor.Itisusuallyhasamixof
spices,rice,andsomesortofmeat.ThebestpuertoricanfoodthatIliketoeatiscalled
mallorcaswhichisatypeofsweetbreadthatismadeinpuertorico.Itisusuallymadelike
regularbreadsoyouwouldprobablyusetheovenanditemslikethat.Whatmakesthis
particularfooditemsospecialisthatarerelativesinPuertoRicoareusuallytheonestosend
usthemallorcas,especiallymylategreatgrandfather.

IthinkthequotethatspeakstomethemostistheonefromNeilArmstrongthat
says,Inmuchofsociety,researchmeanstoinvestigatesomethingyoudonotknowor
understand.Ithinkthatthisisverytrueandatthesametimesomanypeopledont
bothertotakeadvantageoftheresourcesthatarenowavailablebecauseof
technology.Inthisdayandagethereismoreinformationavailablethaneverinhistory.
Anyinformationisliterallyatyourfingertipsandyoucouldhaveinformationaboutthe
Romanswholivedthousandsofyearsagoinseconds.

OneofthethingsthatIamstrugglingwithisdecidingwhotoincludeinmyfamily
tree.Ihavealotofextendedfamily,likemygrandmotherssisterhasalotofrelatives.
Itsalsobeenveryhardtoresearchmyfamilyandgettinginformationonthem.Imalso
findingithardtowritethepaperandgetalotofinterestinginformationtofleshoutthe
paper.AnotherpartabouttheprojectthatIamhavingtroublewithisbuildingthefamily
treeontheslideshow.

Iplaceahugeamountofimportanceonmyworkandmakingsurethatitiserror
free.Itreflectsveryheavilyonmystandardasaprofessionalandonmyownmoral
standard.Theramificationsarehugewhenitcomestoaprofessionalsetting.The
biggestandmostworryingconsequenceistobefiredbecauseyoudidntgetthework
done,ordoingitright.Otherpossibleresultsareadecreaseinpayordemotionto
anotherposition,andevenworsecouldbeheavyscrutinyonyourworkfollowingthat
time.AsIsaidbeforeitalsoreflectsheavilyonyourcharacter,andthereforeyourboss
ormanagermaynotgiveyouimportantworkbecauseyourerrorsmadeyou
untrustworthy.

OneofthebestwaysthatIgetinformationisgoingtowikipediaandthen
followingtheirsourcesatthebottom.IfitisabigenoughtopicthatIthinkitmighthave
beencoveredbymediathenIwouldlookintonewsforthattopic.Thebestwaytoverify
thesourceformeistolookattheendingofthewebsiteurl,ifitis.org,.edu,.gov,or
etc.wouldbeaccreditedwebsites.ForthemostpartItrynottousewikipediaoruser
editedwebsitesbecausetheinformationcouldbewrong.

MostofthetimeIdoreceiveappropriatecriticismbutitdependsonhowgoodof
apeerreviewerthepersonis.Imyselfamnotagoodpeerreviewer,Iknowthis
becauseincomparisontoothersIcantellthatIdontgoasthoroughlyintoit.Mostof
thetimeIdoreceivehelpfulsuggestionsandhints.Idohoweverseetheimportancein
doingthepeerreviewandthepeerreviewprocess.DuetothefactthatImnotasgood
ofapeerrevieweritisslightlyhardertogivegoodfeedback.

TherecenteventsoffridaylastweekinParis,Franceweretragicandhorrific.I
thinkeveryoneintheworldshouldcare,anddefinitelysendtheirprayerstothefamilies
andvictims.Ithinkeveryonedefinitelycaredaswell.Onalmostallformsofsocial
networkingsitesandnewstherewasamassiveamountofresponsefromeveryone.For
example,onFacebooktherewasafilterthatyoucouldputonyourprofilepicturethat
hadtheFrenchflag,andalmosteveryoneIknewputthefilterontheirpicture.Inmay
notbeagreatamountofphysicalsupport,buttherewasdefinitelythewilltosupport
thoseinFrance.Oneofthebiggestreasonswhyweshouldcareisthatthiswasa
massivemovebyterroristorganizations,andnotjustasmallscaleeventinarandom
placeintheworld.Thisisahighlycoordinatedattack,thatnooneexpectedorsaw
cominganditcouldhappenanywhereelse.

OnetoughdecisionthatIhavehadtomakeistogetanotherjobontopofthe
oneIhavealreadyhad.Whatmadememakethedecisionistheneedformoremoney
forschool,andalsoformyself.Itisaharddecisionbecauseyouwouldalwaysratherbe
hangingoutwithfriendsorsomethingelseratherthangoanddomorework.Thelistof
thingsIhadtotakeinconsiderationwaslong,andconsistedof:howmanyhoursdoI
work,whendoIwork,whathourswouldclashwithmyotherjobshours,transportation
toandfrommyjob,andsomeotherthings.Iamhappywithmyfinaldecisionbecauseit
wouldestablishgoodhabitsforme,aswellasgivemetheavenuetopayforschooland
havemoneyformyself.
