Lesson Plan 02
Topic for lesson: Factoring
Instructional Method: Lecture/Concept Maps
Standards met: Use the process of factoring and completing the square in a quadratic function to
show zeros, extreme values, and symmetry of the graph, and interpret these in terms of a context.
(CCSS: F-IF.8a)
Objectives:
One difficulty students have is to know which method to use for
factoring binomials and trinomials.
In this lesson, the instructor will lecture and walk through different
ways to learn how to identify and solve different factoring examples.
Materials and/or resources needed: A large sheet of paper for each student
to draw their concept map on. They will also need something to write their notes on in regards
to the process of factoring through the use of tables, difference of perfect squares, etc.

Procedures/steps for teaching within the Lecture/Concept Map Teaching

format:

The students will be asked to get out their notebooks and to grab one piece of a large piece of paper.
The instructor will explain the process of how they will take notes. Both the teacher and the students will
be drawing up their concept maps as they lecture about how to factor polynomials. (Before the lecture,
the teacher will have needed to have their concept map ready)
The teacher will then begin by showing the difference between a binomial and trinomial and thus
beginning the concept map.
The teacher will then show how to factor a simple binomial through finding the greatest common factor.
The teacher will then scaffold the binomials to make them slightly more difficult than the last one and
will use this scaffolding to introduce factoring by a difference of perfect squares.
This scaffolding will also be used when introducing trinomials and factoring trinomials through the
methods of factoring: tables, completing the square, and the quadratic formula.

Closure: As a ticket out the door, each student will be using their concept map to complete a handful of
different factoring problems consisting of a few binomials and trinomials.
