    Claro 2015 - Online Intercultural Exchange Using Student-Made Videos

    Abstract: In a recent intercultural online exchange (IOE), university students in Canada and Japan made videos of themselves speaking as well as cultural videos and posted them in a private Moodle website. In an IOE, language learners in different countries communicate with each other in the target language(s), with improvement of language ability and an increase in cultural understanding being the main goals. In this project, students recorded videos of themselves and their environments instead of communicating by text only. Recorded videos may be better than text only for online communication because: 1) Videos contain multimodal information like facial expressions, intonation, etc., which can help to increase understanding; 2) Live video chat is too fast for many beginning and intermediate students. With student-made videos, students have time to reflect and to prepare; 3) Students can take videos of not only themselves but of the culture they live in. These culturally rich videos can be used to explore the daily life and traditions of another country, deepening cultural understanding. In this article, reasons for doing an international online exchange will be explored and the first International Communication Experience (ICE) project will be described. Cite as: Claro, J. (2015).
